Injection pump adjustment

I recently installed a remanufactured injection pump on my Perkins 4236 but discovered after installing the new pump that the scribe line on the timing case is absent . I cleaned the paint off the area with acetone but there's no evidence of a scribe line. The injectors are also new remanufactured units. There is a little black smoke . I would like to try shifting the pump in small increments to eliminate the smoke ; ie try to find where the scribe line should be. Could someone who knows about thes things please advise me how to go about doing this? Thanks, Oldgaffer

Re: Injection pump adjustment

It's pretty involved process. You might try just moving the pump a little bit one way or another and see it if that fixes things

Re: Injection pump adjustment

Trial and error with diesel fuel systems is not good practice. It works fine with gasoline engines pre electronic ignition. I can easily set timing and gaps for anything old and tune it by ear. Not so with diesel.

You need to use a dial indicator on the valves to find TDC. You then need to either find or add the corresponding injection pump timing mark. Do it once and do it right. Is it really missing?

You can use a center punch to make the mark and label it in situ. Of course I'm assuming you have the right pump and the drive gear is correctly installed. There are two options from memory. I have a cav unit.
