Impeller Cover Screw (Volvo MD2030)

Hi all!

I am trying to replace some screws that are ruined on my impeller cover. Can't seem to find them online so I was going to try my local Fasteners and cross my fingers that they have something. The screws appear to be bronze.

Can anyone confirm that these screws are bronze?

Thanks in advance for the help! I don't want to end up with the wrong type and have them seize up!

Jeff

I would love to see an answer for this. I am in the same boat and last time I posted this I got 20 responses to just buy a SpeadSeal cover.

Re: Impeller Cover Screw (Volvo MD2030)

You can get them from any Volvo distributor. Expensive of course for what they are, but still in total not much. Try WWW.marinepartsexpress.com.

Good practice to always keep a few spares on hand.

It is a Johnson pump. Johson wont sell you the pump, but may sell you compatible screws...they are the same for many models.

Or, find a good industrial screws shop...they will likely have something compatible.

My Johnson pump uses metric screws and IIRC, they were M4 and I think the pitch was 0.5. regardless they were "common" M4 threads.

Local nuts and bolts retailer had them in brass or stainless but not bronze which I think is what Johnson uses.

You might find the Jonson model number underneath the Volo paint on the impeller cover plate. Armed with that, the process becomes easier

Re: Impeller Cover Screw (Volvo MD2030)

Thanks for the help. I'll dig into those resources. Of course local shops came up nil. Bought some stainless ones for spares just in case. Unfortunately, the boat is on the other side of the country now...makes everything more difficult.

Looked into the Speedseal as well. Not too expensive and would be handy. I'll have to do some more research before I decide!

Johnson uses a simple brass screw, that's why they're always breaking. Replace them with stainless and be done with it.

Stainless is fine. I have been using them on Johnson pumps for 30+ years. Try Lowes dont bother with genuine. 316 ss best but 304 is ok

Re: Impeller Cover Screw (Volvo MD2030)

Great to hear. I wasn't sure if the two different metals work react poorly. If stainless will work I'm all over it. Thanks!!

Re: Impeller Cover Screw (Volvo MD2030)

SpeeedSeal apparently has had "issues", read problems according to my Yanmar Guy. My Yanmar has SS screws an d YES have a complete spare set. Switch to SS if you can , Bronze wayy too soft. Russ

Re: Impeller Cover Screw (Volvo MD2030)

Love Speedseal. Have put some hours on it. Would like to know problems. My experience with many impeller covers is to bite the bullet and use the specified screws even though they can be ridiculously expensive.
Love the guy at Speedseal. Call him.

Re: Impeller Cover Screw (Volvo MD2030)

I recommend using M4 hex head SS machine screws. It is much easier to remove a hex head with a hex nut driver or socket set than a slotted or Philips head screw.
