I'm So Stupid !

The whole time I have thought to have a yanmar 3gm30 in my boat because that's what I thought it was according to a manual that came with the boat. Well last night I looked at the actual motor itself and it is a 3HM35F!!! I have been using an oild filter for a 3gm30 and I hope to god I haven't screwed anything up. As for fuel filters and everything else I have matched up with what I had before but maybe I should check that out too. I guess my real worry is have I been really bad to my engine using the wrong oild filter. Btw it fit like a glove if that means anything?

Unlikely. If the o-ring didn't line up or the thread was wrong, that would be a problem, but it would be fairly obvious. Once you get past the physical dimensions & characteristics, oil filters all use a paper filter element to filter the oil. You should be fine.

According to the Yanmar parts catalogs at Torenson marine they are different part numbers.

Probably differing in capacity of the filter and not so much the technology. Don't beat yourself up, I am pretty sure no harm, no foul.

It looks like there have been a couple of part number changes over time but the engines do not appear to use the same part number.

Don't feel bad - it's a good lesson, cheap. I had one of those recently as well, sort of an inversion of yours... when I did my first oil change I just assumed that the filter that came with the engine was correct. The results were dramatic.

Now I have another maxim tattooed to the inside of my eyelids: assume nothing.

Cheers,
Steve

The inside diameter of the gasket was just slightly larger than the outside diameter of the flange. If you look at the CF thread I linked there, the photo at the bottom shows the problem. The engine came with the wrong filter, and one that crossed to that part number had a slight dimensional difference in the gasket - enough to blow out as soon as there was oil pressure.

A scary day!

Jeez micro, that was a lot bigger problem than I have. They ordered me the right filter and hopefully it comes in tommorow so I can go ahead and get this over with...btw what an awesome websit you have, your doing what I have always wanted to, but I'm not that brilliant lol, much appreciated.

Thanks, Irwin!

BTW, quick edit to my previous - I meant to say the inside diameter of the gasket was just slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the flange. Just enough for the first one to hold all this time, miraculously, but for the new one to pop as soon as there was pressure (fortunately jetting down into the bilge instead of up into the pilothouse!).
