Re: I was Bored so Pulled the Head on my Yanmar

Just a final update. I've got over 20 hours on the engine now with no issues at all. It starts with just a bump of the starter and runs like a top and does not use any oil. It is a happy engine...

I'm about done worrying about it too.

I still don't know what caused the original piston failure. It happened just all of a sudden being hard to start and using a lot of oil, from using no oil before. Was working fine one day and the next not. Happened on one of my many delta trips.

Oh well, Its at least fixed and running like I remember it doing. So happy Girl. WOW. I need to change the filter and oil at 20 hours on the rebuild. Always something to do, I guess.

Hiya Chic! Could it be a bad part that was improperly manufactured to specs? Check with the manufacturer for a free replacement of the failed part(s); be ready to send the part(s) back for credit. Write to: c/o Public Relations Department. There is nothing for you to lose, except a letter stating the fact, (with a spelling check!) Good luck!

I though about you when I saw a buddy spraying starting fluid in the intake of the ford engine on His Grand Banks.

He doesn't possess your can do attitude though.

Enjoy

It takes more than a bit of starting fluid or cylinders full of seawater to hurt one of those Fords!

Seriously, that's the only way a really old one will start and a customer of mine did fill his cylinders with seawater more than once. A few new/ used push rods and a better exhaust design and it runs today!

My old Perkins 4.154 cranks on the first bump. Even so, she has a lot of age on her. A good engine but because they are a tad rare the rebuild kits are $2k or more.

I like simplicity and dependability of what I have but have been exploring re-power options,

Kinda hoping "Pink Power Pathfinder Engines by SailorChic" sends me a brochure soon.

Re: I was Bored so Pulled the Head on my Yanmar

Actually my purple yanmar with pink injector lines is running pretty well, I have 90 hours on it. It just runs very nicely. I am still amazed that I rebuilt the diesel and it runs. Lordy I hope I don't have to do that again. Way too much fun. Just back from a kayak trip to the grocery store. Sunny and almost 70.

Great. I'm trying to convince myself to give it a try. Thanks for the update.

Re: I was Bored so Pulled the Head on my Yanmar

Hi, only found this thread today, just finished reading, don't remember whether you have raw or indirect cooling.

"Delta trips" (#406) made me wonder whether mud or weed might have caused a local blockage > overheating > the broken ring at cylinder 3?

Three hours' reading and all I've got is one wild guess...

Tried full power yet or still babying it?

Great job by the way!

Its a fresh water cooled engine. Yes I have run it at the max rpm. Though not that long. Most of the time it runs at 2300 rpm. The engine has never overheated and yes the alarms work. Plus I have a temperature gauge.

SC, I questioned the Yanny dealer down here on the Bayou (on the sly) and he told me that yanny had a run of bad pistons with bad ring grooves! But the factory only fixed some that were under a year old ! Just sayin it did not come from anything you did !! And I knew you could fix it !!! Grats !!
