She will graduate Magna Cum Laude when she is done with this project. Her hourly rate based on recent experiences will be at least $95.00 per hour and when she is done YOU TOO will have a PURPLE engine.......

Ah, I don't have a degree in engineering either, but I do have a PE. That be a professional engineering thingy. I'm the one that was training the degreed engineers after they got out of collage. :-).

Plus I now have the magic tool that is needed to remove the crankshaft in the GM series engines.

Purple the Royal color... Gee you know the guy that picked out the yanmar color was an engineer. Grey...so boring!

I think we all should Vote to award her a "Maritime Mechanical Doctorate" degree. This for not only successfully rebuilding her engine but also for having a "Thread" that has had such great "positive and encouraging enthusiasm" by everyone.

I don't post very often but wanted to say how I've really enjoyed everyone's positive participation. That's why Cruiser's Forum is such a great group to be a part of.

I am one of those that rail about the (US) educational system [oops, bordering on politics - to hell with it] often. I know a lot of people with degrees around me and many just can't perform. I think there should be acknowledgement in other forms. Including income.

There is going to be some beauty in the engine room with some serious contrast.

Obviously - pics or it didn't happen.

Now every one will want a Royal Purple engine. I am taking notes on this. If I ever have to rebuild mine, I will have to do it myself. Best of luck to you SC.

Re: I was Bored so Pulled the Head on my Yanmar

Today was just a day to de-gunk all the bolts, washers, etc. Tomorrow I'll de-gunk the bigger pieces and start spray painting the timing cover, oil pan and engine supports purple.

I also have a can of pink paint, so the external oil and HP fuel lines will be pink. One must have a color coordinated engine after all.

Hum... Maybe Yanmar needs a Fashion Consultant. Do a little Feng Shui on the engine design, which it dearly needs.

Re: I was Bored so Pulled the Head on my Yanmar

The painting begins.... Cleaned / degreased the oil pan, timing cover and valve cover and have painted them a royal purple. It's at least going to look better. Grey is just too boring for an engine...

Got to do the flywheel housing and engine mounts too. May leave transmission grey as it looks ok paint wise and will contrast with the purple engine. Very important considerations if your a woman sailor.

Lets hope it runs well too. In a holding pattern otherwise waiting for machinist and parts...

Everyone knows you use exterior latex paint. Though this time I'm using real rattle can engine paint.

Re: I was Bored so Pulled the Head on my Yanmar

Hi again Sailorchic34,

The passionate purple looks pretty impressive.

There is a practical reason that engines are painted in light colours and it has to do with oil leaks showing up and generally better visibility in low light conditions. Male conservatism re bold colours may also play a part but I am not going to admit this outright.

Re: I was Bored so Pulled the Head on my Yanmar

Only raises the question as to why white is not used more often.

With the delightfully black color diesel oil gets, I think purple would be fine. My other option was hot pink and I did not think it would go with the bilge color so well.

Besides never use logic to describe why grey makes a good engine paint. Its just way too boring for words...

.
I've been around a fair number of white engines. Problem is when they're run hard the white usually turns cream from the heat. Now who really wants a cream engine with white accents?
