How to drain possible seawater in engine before starting?

Ok this is likely just being really paranoid but I just wanted to be sure I don't mess anything up. So for the heck of it today (in order to learn for an emergency situation later) while docked I tried to start the yanmar 2gm13 engine by hand (with the crank) I did it maybe 4 or 5 attempts but never succeeded in starting, but I realized I made a mistake, which was that I forgot to shut off the water inlet Sea-cock. So I am not sure exactly how many cranks it will take to flood the engine, but I am not sure how to check if it is. I am sure I would not have been able to hydrolock the engine with the manual crank, in any case.

So basically I am asking how I can check or verify that there is no flooding due to cranking without firing, before I try to start the engine normally. Or if there is flooding, how I can remove it!

I hope this was not too vague, and thank you for reading!

Confirm the seacock is off (or remove the belt from the raw water pump). Decompress the cylinders with the levers and turn the engine over a few times with the crank handle to expel any possible water.

Now open seacock (or refit the belt) and start engine in the normal way.

Do this as soon as possible after a potential flooding.

My water lift has a drain screw in the bottom. I think it's a #10 sheet metal screw with a rubber gasket.

Re: How to drain possible seawater in engine before starting?

Thanks all,

I ended up turning off the water and cranking over a few times with the decompression levers open. No water or anything came out, so I guess that was ok (?). Anyway, engine started fine after that. Thanks for the suggestions.
