Re: How to destroy a new $20K diesel

Hi again, The OP's latest pics clearly show a proper water separator installation. Look at pic #4/9. I see that Centek and Soundown are also manufacturing these.

Mirar:

Fine if he is (though he has not said that he is), but
how is the separated water to exit the boat when
said water is below the waterline?

Which picture is #4/9? What are
we to be looking for?

Re: How to destroy a new $20K diesel

Post #113 has a series of photos, the fourth of those(4/9) shows the water separator about level with the top of the engine. It clearly shows the large exhaust gas hose and below that the smaller water discharge. To quote Dave Gerr, " Second, the separated water can be dumped below the waterline, usually about 4-6 inches below, but no more. The tail-end , gas-line portion of the exhaust automatically acts as an idle bypass. Third, the tail-end gas line is now cool and a smaller diameter than the standard wet exhaust line."
Of course, this is just one fellows take on it and depends on a proper install. I just wanted to point out that it isn't as "far out there" as many suggest. It is just a different approach.
cheers, Greg

This exhaust system has more problems than a Russian play.

Re: How to destroy a new $20K diesel

If the water is to be separated and returned
outside the boat "4-6 inches below, but no more"
beneath the waterline, take a look at post #100.
Clearly, the engine is below the waterline. How
would this keep water from taking that route
back into the exhaust?
And, again, Zing has not said he has one of
these water separators. Could he have one
and not know it?

Re: How to destroy a new $20K diesel

Rep: the exhaust/ water separator....

I get the concept, I think it works in about the position shown.....
But I googled Halyard and Centec separators and they look unite different to me for what is shown. The separator looks to have a sill the water/gas nix flows over, then gravity does the separation.

This seems to be a simple Y arrangement.

Not saying it's wrong, just how it works is not obvious to my eye.

Still, none of that explains his origioinal problem.

Also, I have to say it, there are a lot of folks posting here with strong opinions and advice who should be a good deal more circumspect.

Terra Nova, I believe you think you know what you are saying, but I really think you don't understand the issues. It's damn hard to be tactful in writting on these forums, and I'm doing my best so please thak this in the helpful manner meant. It's not intend to be a jab. Generally he is doing OK given the boat and layout he has to work with.

Give the guy a break.

Zing, the one thing, other than the separator issue above, that i see is that the gooseneck appears low to me. To my mind you would want it a bit higher above the waterline. From the boats profile it may even be a bit below the waterline.

Good luck.

If this were true he wouldn't have destroyed a $20k engine.

This post has no content other than to criticize.

No information, no suggestions, no help.

Likewise.

BTW, my earlier post was in reply to the previous post. Yours appeared while I had been typing.

Re: How to destroy a new $20K diesel

If the small hose from the "Y" and the thru-hull it exits through are both below the waterline without a siphon break the entire exhaust system below it will fill with raw water when not running. If it does have one it might relieve enough exhaust pressure at idle so that the larger hose would fill and when shut down flow back to the water lift and possibly to the manifold if the volume were sufficient.

Re: How to destroy a new $20K diesel

It wasn't ideal but the back pressure failed with the existing 3" exhaust on certification. To run 4" all the way back was going to involve a lot of carpentry and other expenses. The installer came up with this work around and when we did the back pressure test (measured at the muffler) it worked and the back pressure was well within specs. Water flows equally out both exhaust it doesn't favor either. Unconventional for sure but effective.

So the engine ran today. It does appear that the problem may be at the gasket between the elbow and manifold. An exhaust leak here won't allow enough pressure to build between the elbow and muffler. The pressure lost through this leak allows water to backup to the engine. Having a new gasket fabricated tomorrow.
