help please

Hi all we have paragon p21 transmission it has developed a fault where it binds up and stalls the motor when shifting from fwd to reverse and vice versa, it doesn't happen every time but its getting worse. We are turning around and heading south down the gulf of Thailand trying to get near Singapore where there's some expertise with paragon to effect a repair. We would dearly like to hear from anyone who knows what the problem maybe so we can order the correct parts.

Short of a linkage or fluid issue I can't see a lot u can do while underway.

Hi its auto transmission fluid but its been there for awhile though it looks like fresh

If it seems the right color and viscosity its likely ok. Fairly easy to change if you have fluid and access.

On the linkage, if you can watch it (engine not running ) while someone shifts fwd-n-rev a few times you can ascertain that it has the right travel. Put ur hand on it lightly while it is being shifted. You may be able to feel the shift mechanism click in and out.

Change your transmission fluid, since you are expressing considerable concern. Even if it is hard to do, change all or some.

Where the shift linkage attaches to the gearbox is at the fluid divert valve / shift valve. It is easy to remove and inspect for wear or damage. All this gearbox does is divert hydraulic fluid (trans fluid) under pressure to the forward or reverse clutches causing them to engage. Very simple really. It sounds like fluid is being sent to both sets of clutches at the same time causing the gear to bind up the pump as the fluid has no where to go and stall the motor. Check or replace the valve before opting for some expensive repair. They are fairly cheap, and easy to inspect / change out. Make sure you have the numbers off of the gear that is installed on your boat when ordering parts to insure you get the right one. Dont just order for a paragon gear box.

Likely a good idea. Over 95% of intermittent hydraulic problems are due to contaminated fluid.

Thanks so much at least I have a start. Rebel thats somthing I hadn't thought about. Will change the oil but I suspect that the problem is deeper than that. Fortunately paragon were re branded in Thailand as twin disc so I may be able to get parts here, thanks so much.

JSTA REBEL, has hit the nail on the head, flow divider joint is leaking energising both fwd and rev plates similtaniously

We have continued up towards Hua Hin and will be in the marina tomorrow. We discovered that it will shift if it's at 1000 revs so that kind of confirms what you guys are saying. Being mechanically challenged we thought it may be best to work on it in a marina.
I'll post any results as we find them.

Well its fixed turns out it was an id10t error. When we got to clean water I dived on the prop to give it a clean and found some poly cord wrapped around the shaft between the strut and the prop. Once removed transmission is back to normal. Thanks for your input people
