Re: grey stuff instead of oil

Water pump won't explain cranking but no start.

Turn the engine over by hand. Is it very easy to turn or does it get tight, then relax, then tight, then relax.

Methinks compression.

The only thing on teh bronze bolt theory is "how long" was the bolt and did the bolt get screwed into and through the cylinder wall? It owuld be a first for me.

It would be an error to assume the first repair has anything to do with the second problem.

It would also be an error to assume it doesn't...

Re: grey stuff instead of oil

Perhaps Pete, but my engine (2003T - same type, but 3 cyl, and turbo) has almost 10,000 hours and has never had that issue. I have seen some that have blocked the drains, but I believe that was because of a salt build up due to weeping water seals - the build up was all around the pump body by the drains, blocking them underneath as well as the top/sides. Like all engineering good maintenance is the key to a long life.

Easy for the OP to check if the drain galleries are clear. If they are, the water did not come from the water pump...
