Gearshift Throw Volvo 2040 With MS 25 Saildrive.

I frend of mine has just sailed into into the anchorage and is having some problems with forward and reverse, needing several attempts to engage. The problem first occurred three months ago.
Normally I would encourage him to post his own question on CF, but he struggles with written English.

Any ideas ?
My first thought is to check the gear linkage throws, but I have been unable to find the correct movement range online.
Does anyone know these?
There also seems a lot of confusion about the correct gearbox oil.(ATF or 15w 40?)

Anyway I have offered to help, but as its more like the blind leading the blind so I thought I throw the question open.
