Nicely done!!

It sure looked too tight in there, but I'm using my boat as a reference.

Re: Gear box leaking, how to fix?

Thanks for the advice Bill. Everything place is closed for the weekend. I'll have to wait until Monday.
There are numbers on the seal:
30 40 7

Re: Gear box leaking, how to fix?

Well done!!

Buy 3#

Insert it on the right side!. Use a flat wooden long as large, and press evenly :-)

Bolts should not be SS, but 10.8 high tensile iron

The stainless bolt you see in the photo was just used to 'pull' the shaft coupler from the shaft. If you back the nut off the shaft halfway, then use longer bolts and connect the shaft coupler to the gear box, you can pop the shaft coupler off the shaft quite easily. Unfortunately I leaned this trick the hard way, and maybe why I'm having to replace the seal[emoji21]

There are numbers on the seal:
30 40 7
Found on e-bay under metric oil seals (all categories)
30 = 1.18" I.D.
40 = 1.57" O.D.
7 = 0.28" WIDTH
Several sellers listed with one here in L.A. Orange County.
Priced at $7.77 with free delivery.
Others cheaper but further away.
Try a few auto part shops. Hopefully your on the Pacific side Panama City and
not Atlantic side. Should be able to find locally, Just have to be persistent.

I'm out in the sticks (Linton Bay Marina). An hour to Colon and hour and a half to PC. I'll check the auto shops in Sabinitas Monday morning, if I strike out it looks like another PC field trip!

Re: Gear box leaking, how to fix?

Keep us in the loop. If you strike out I'll order from e-bay vendor in Anaheim, Ca. on Monday and should have it in hand Weds/ Thurs. I can send to you expedited delivery.
I got off a tanker in Colon and got a ride over to P.C. 20 or so years ago. Atlas beer and rum & cokes in a can. Oh yes , can't forget the octopus cocktails in a cup to go.

Only $3 dollars if you order from China directly.
I'm still trapped in the 1970's when a new car was only $2,000.
Boats were $1,000 per foot.
Hamburgers at 15 cents, and 5 cent candy bars went up to 10 cents.
1 OZ. of silver was $1.00
I just bought new front and rear seals with new lock nuts for my 2 Velvet Drives
at a cost of $67.80 so yeah, $8.00 US for a single seal.

Re: Gear box leaking, how to fix?

Concerning the refit (or least fun) part of the process its critical to get the oil seal in straight and that means not just parallel to a cast surface at the rear of the gearbox. If the seal is not straight then the lip of the seal will be constantly sliding up and down the shaft (giggidy). A simple installer can be made with a short piece of tube that fits around the shaft and is slightly less than the OD of he seal and then pull the seal in.

The 'pulling in' has to use a threaded something on the end off the shaft, either a bolt or nut with appropriate washer e.t.c

Good luck.

Re: Gear box leaking, how to fix?

At the 5th and final auto parts store in Sabinitas, just as I was about to give up and drive to Panama City, I found the seal. I tried to buy three, but they only had one that was all rubber/plastic. The other ones were metal outer ring with rubber inner ring? Would this kind of seal work? I bought one as a spare any way.
I used some Permatex on the outer ring of the seal, but forgot to wipe the inner seal with ATF[emoji19]. I made a ghetto pusher with a large washer and a roll of electrical tape. Click image for larger version

It seems like the seal is sitting in to the gear box a bit farther than the one I replaced. The old one sat pretty much flush with the end of the gear box. I hope I didn't crush the new seal🤞
I'll fill the gear box (but not over fill!) tomorrow morning and go for a spin....

Thanks for all of the tips!

Perseverance pays off. The ones with the outer metal rings will work fine. I actually prefer them over the rubber coated ones. they seem sturdier to me. As long as you got it in square in the bore I doubt it will matter if it's in a little more than flush.
How much did the seal cost in Panama?

I bought two bolts and the seal and it was $4.70. I almost bought the octopus ceviche at the Rey supermarket to give it a try, but chickened out. No cold 'Ron y Cola' in the fridge so I had to settle for a couple 'Panamas'.

Good job, enjoy the brews. you earned them. I lived in the Philippines for a few years and
learned to enjoy a good octopus cocktail. I used to buy large dried squid in Korea at the street stalls and the Koreans would go nuts that a gringo would eat that stuff. Mexico still has the best street sea foods. I take it back. Good eats every where. Good luck and smooth sailing.
