Fuel Tank / Exhuast Clearance

Hi guys

Been making some progress on my engine install but now have come to a tricky bit. Just completed the exhaust I have a plastic Vetus waterlift installed just off center and behind the engine with all new Vetus hose. From the waterlift the hose goes up about 30" and loops down about 16" to the outlet in center of transom about 4" above the W/L. This is all good, I think anyway. Now is time to install my new plastic Moeller fuel tank and I would like to put it in the wasted space under cockpit floor; it's centered, slightly higher than engine fuel inlet and doesn't take any storage space. But it's close to the waterlift and exit hose, only about 1" clearance to side of tank. Is this too close, are there any clearance rules with a waterlift or fuel tanks?

None that I know.
If its a water cooled exhaust then the "lift" isn't hot.

I would caution that the fuel tank may expand when filled and the entire exhaust assembly may be subject to shock type movements at the pressure builds and the water is discharged from the Lift chamber.

Bottom line is take care to avoid chafe.

Thanks for reply, I wasn't so concerned with heat as I know as long as there is water going through (pump failure???) the exhaust it would be cool. But more unaware of the rules for safety, insurance, etc.

Also does anyone know if there are guide lines for securing wet exhuast hose? (as there are for plumbing i.e. must supported every 24" or whatever)

Specifically pages 10 & 11:
"... All piping should be installed with a minimum clearance of 229 mm (9in) from combustible materials...
... Avoid routing exhaust piping close to fuel pumps, fuel lines, fuel filters, fuel tanks and other combustible materials ..."

Gord thanks for info.

But looking through the Cat Instructions they seem to be for large dry exhaust (mine is a 9hp single) just a little blurb at the end for wet exhaust. I really like the location of the tank, did a little shifting around and now have 2" clearance. Also I am making a double wall aluminum heat shield for the tank that should look after even the worst case. I hope!!!!

You might also consider fiberglass heat tape which acts as an insulator.
