Gallons used divided by hours the engine was run = gallons burned per hour

Er, you need us to tell you?

Just devide the distance by the speed, that will give you the time, then multiply by your hourly fuel consumption.

By the way, 45 GALS PER HOUR????? !!!!!!
What have you got, a cruise liner????

I'd check that mate, maybe it's 45 LITRES per hour which would be about right for a small-medium sized powerboat.

But the calculation are for a rhumb line so he needs to figure in tacking. Which could add another 1200 miles. I think when you tack you get better hull speed so the distance is longer but the time is reduced.

Re: Fuel Consumption

As hes talking about averaging 12kts and the fact that his fuel consumtion seems to be that of a large cargo vessel, I would guess we're not talking about a sailing boat here so tacking is not really an issue.

Re: Fuel Consumption

At 45 GPH I don't think we are talking about a sail boat. If I had to guess I'd say 50 feet with twin 500HP diesels

Not even close at 12 knots. I'd guess 100 ft and 100+ tons with 500 hp. The scary part is the guy asking the question may be at the helm.

Re: Fuel Consumption

Yeh sounds like a stink boat to me. But the math is quite simple..

@ 1,130 miles at 45 gal per hour @ approx 12 knots

Travelling time is approx 100 hours.. times 45gals. Equals 4500 gallons required. Not including extra fuel required if driving into a heavy sea or wind.
@ $4 per gallon (cheap) it is only $18,000 to fill her up. Bargain!

Re: Fuel Consumption

I believe a decimal point is missing. Maybe it should be 4.5 GPH..

Re: Fuel Consumption

1130 miles divided by 12 knots equals 94.16 hours.

45 gallons per hour times 94.16 hours equals 4237.5 gallons.

At 4.5 gallons per hour the consumption would be 423.7 gallons.

Even 4.5 GPH is in the motor yacht burn range. Maybe it should be 0.45 GPH although I don't know many sailboats that can motor at 12 kts with that fuel burn.
