Nothing obvious, there is a propane tank nearby but I think I would have found out the hard way if that was leaking.

Re: Fordson Dexta ran away, now what?

Florida Mike said white smoke can be caused by unburned fuel and I said that white smoke can be caused by water / coolant getting into the cylinder. From googling around the net, I think we're both right. Unfortunately that leaves a lot of things to check. Black smoke comes from a rich fuel mixture which I have personal experience with. My turbo seized and my engine made a lot of black smoke.
Blue smoke apparently is an indication that the engine is running on engine lubricating oil.

If the motor is still fitted with original oil bath air cleaner this may have been over filled.

Re: Fordson Dexta ran away, now what?

So heres how I got on...

long story short it goes again.

i got a local mechanic to come and have a look and we turned it over with the injectors out and decided it was turning fine, had compression, fuel and air.

So we put it all back together fired it up and it ran fine! Blew out a bit of blue smoke at the start but ran fine after that we took her for a burn out into the lake and back no worries.

When it ran away I knocked the air filter off and there is a foam insert that was half sucked into the intake manifold, what i didn't realise at the the time was that there was a supposed to be a plastic bit holding the foam bit in.

we guess that that plastic bit had got sucked in on the previous time i had run the engine and part of it maybe got stuck under a valve and when i topped up with oil it poured into a cylinder.

All good times. Onto the next problem, remounting the heat exchanger.

white smoke IS WATER VAPOR... Excess diesel smoke is BLACK. Oil is BLUE..

I do believe if I were you I'd look at the possibility of a blown head gasket..

GOOD LUCK

Re: Fordson Dexta ran away, now what?

Cheers mate,

White smoke can also be too much air or a lack of fuel. Probably from the dirty injector nozzles that I replaced.

After remedying the run away problem and with the new injectors the engine is working sweet, no smoke at all.

It has been my experience than when a diesel runs away burning it's engine oil the smoke is unbelievable. Is this a 2 cycle diesel?

If adding oil to the engine results in oil in the cylinder, doesn't that mean that your valve oil seals are shot?

Not sure the mechanic seemed to think there was a bit of plastic jamming something open that allowed the oil into the cylinder. Its running like a dream now though!
