Flushing 5hp Tohatsu

We have a 5hp 2 stroke Tohatsu that we brought new a year or so ago.

I understand that it is desirable to flush out outboards with fresh water after use, but there seems to be no way to do this on the Tohatsu. I've tried with a bucket of water and it wasn't pretty. Any suggestions?

Also the dealer said that the best way to leave the motor was to run it with the choke out and the fuel line disconnected until the motor stopped so that the engine had a thick coating of oil. Any comments?

I have a Tohatsu 4hp 4 stroke. There is an adaptor that screws into the engine under the motor head. It allows you to attach a hose and flush with fresh water from a faucet. I have mine rigged wit a quik connect and just leave it on the motor. I flush mine with Salt Away, all is good. Go to Tohatsu's web site and you can down load the manual for your motor.

As to the dealer's suggestion, I wouldn't do it.

When laying up my 5hp two stroke Tohatsu, I stand it in a 5 gallon bucket of fresh water, without the fuel line connected, and start it up. It runs for a few minutes, and if the bucket's pretty full, it doesn't make a mess. When it quits, that's it.

Four months later, it always starts on the second pull.

I don't do this on a regular basis, only when storing it for the hurricane season.
