Farymann M30 Rebuild

I'm in the process of rebuilding a Farymann M30 engine for my 1972 Pearson 33. I have the engine almost apart, with the holdout being the flywheel nut.

I've downloaded the manual and it says you need a special tool to take out the nut. I measured the nut and it's 1.75 inches = 45mm. When I tried a 45mm socket, it can't go deep enough to grab the sides, due to the nut being recessed.

Someone recommended using a cold chisel and a small sledge hammer. Two problems, it's kind of tight and with my luck I'd hit my hand instead of the nut.

Anyone know where I can find a tool to remove this nut? Or else it's plan 2 - go electric.

Can you grind the socket thinner? Also if you look at the socket you'll notice that it sort of tapers toward the end and the very end doesn't hold the nut well so you'll need to slightly shorten the socket by grinding to overcome this. If possible I would buy a six point impact socket to modify as opposed to a chrome plated socket.
Know anyone with a Lathe that can do this for you?

I guess it's time to visit Sears and pick up a socket.

There's several machine shops around the marina. I'll go measure the inside of the recess and have them shave the socket to size.

A good tool supplies will have long sockets. ( as long as the plug remover ones)

So the socket is too short to reach in ? Or too thick walled ?

Machining thinner walls onto the socket - maybe get an impact socket and try that. I believe impact sockets are made with higher grade steel. Get a quality brand also, again higher grade metal.

Too short ? cut the socket off from it's base and have a piece of pipe welded as an extension. I have done this one, works great.

Also going down a size in drive will make for a thinner walled socket. Maybe a quality 1/4 drive breaker bar and deep socket will do the trick !

I went to every hardware store, Sears, Harbor Freight, Auto Store and no one had a 45mm socket.

I went back to the motor with a cold chisel and a 4lb hammer. Three whacks and the nut was loose.

I attached a picture so that you can see the recess and the ding on the nut.

Thanks for all the input. I'll be sure to use those other suggestions in the future.

I had no idea you needed such a large socket. I have never even heard of a socket that large, unless you are talking about 3/4 drive.

Time to head in a different direction.

After pulling the flywheel off, I found out why the motor wasn't putting out that much power - the key was sheared off. As I kept on taking more parts off, I found the water jacket on one of the sleeves had some corrosion and was seeping water into the oil. This caused both pistons to score the walls with the rings.

Rebuild is going to be expensive!

Exit stage left - I'm going electric.
