Experience with non-OEM starter motors?
Greetings all,
I want to replace the starter motor on my 1989 Yanmar 3GM30F. The old one still works, but the brushes are worn so I'm going to keep it as a backup while it still has some life left. A replacement for the original Hitachi S114 – 303 looks to be about $400, but I can get a "Strike Power" non-OEM starter from Charge-n-Start for about a hundred dollars. I also saw that API Marine appears to make a starter but they charge about $250. Looking closely at the picture of the API starter, I could see a visible defect in the main casting, so they're out. Comments?
TIA
Jim

I’ve had excellent luck with Arco parts <www.arcomarine.com/>.
Yanmar Starters (Arco 98180) ➥ Inboard Starters & Repair Parts
$192.71 ➥ http://www.marinepartssource.com/new...tegory=&mfgno=

Re: Experience with non-OEM starter motors?
I burned up a starter for my 3JH4E in the Bahamas last year and had a brand new one flown in from the Yanmar disty in FL. It was about $325. I took the old one to my local starter/alt repair guy to see if he could rebuild it as a spare. He said he could get me a new aftermarket starter for less than the cost of the parts. It looked exactly like the old Hitachi, and was about $115. It's probably made in the same factory in China as the OEM version. I don't recall the exact brand/PN but I can look it up next time on the boat if you want.

Re: Experience with non-OEM starter motors?
I have had 2 after market starters and both had the end bell on the gear end crack. Went back to an OEM starter and waiting to see what happens. I have been doing a little googling on the subject and found 3 other boats with the same problem same engine. All seemed to have been purchased between 07-10. Prices ranged from $76-200. We all came to the conclusion it was a bad casting on the after market. I want to buy a spare but still not sure which I will get.

Yes, there's an internal difference. Arco uses 11 tooth gear vs 9 tooth gear on OEM Hitachi.

Re: Experience with non-OEM starter motors?
Im looking for one for my Perkins 4-154. Just emailed the folks at TAD in Virginia. Mine is a Lucas starter and much like with British cars Lucas is the Prince of Darkness so I would like to carry a spare. Ive heard the reason the British drink warm beer is because of Lucas refrigerators...

Re: Experience with non-OEM starter motors?
I found a "whale of a deal" at Pat's Small Engine Parts online for $79.95 for a starter that fit right on my 3gm30f. Here's a pic of the old and new starter plus the box indicating the country of manufacture. Nothing but the best from those folks, I hear . I do believe I'll order a second one for a spare, just in case it doesn't last a long time.

Re: Experience with non-OEM starter motors?
By the way, the 3gm30f has a nine tooth starter gear.

Re: Experience with non-OEM starter motors?
That Arco tech tip was very interesting. It 's making me wonder if the after markets I had were 11 tooth starters. With the shaft being farther from the fly wheel would probably increase the pressure on the shaft and crack the end bell. The original OEM 3gm30 starter had lasted over 4000 hrs. Then I was replacing it every season. The last time I got lucky and was able to find a missing piece without taking the engine apart.
