Howdy Folks,
Our departure date is fast approaching and we're still working to nail down good option for a
dinghy motor. We've got a great little
aluminum AB
RIB but are currently running it with a 6HP Tohatsu
4 stroke that we've had from a previous
boat. It works but just barely planes the AB with 1-person...2 people on plane is not an option.
Our intention all along has been to pick-up a 15HP Yamaha 2-stroke in the
bahamas. We like the lower weight and simplicity, along with the extra
power we want to plane with multiple people and/or dive
gear. We recently talked to a few local folks who have had great luck with rebuilt engines from a local retiree. So we've been kicking around the idea of saving some cash and going that
route. He has a nice looking older 15HP
Evinrude 2-stroke that has been completely rebuilt and appears to be in very nice shape and runs well.
My only real question here is with respect to
reliability and serviceability in out of the way places. With Yamaha, I know anywhere we go
parts and mechanical knowledge likely wont be too far away. What about
Evinrude? Our initial plans are
east coast of the US, followed by
Caribbean but we'd like to get through the
canal and into the Pacific in the not too distant future. Would we be better off with a Yamaha or are
parts and
service for Evinrude readily available..."out there"?
Thanks,
EB
