Engine Switch

The block is cracked and not repairable on my Yanmar 3GMd. I am having difficulty finding a rebuilt marine Yanmar 3 cyl as rebuilders (Mack, Diesel engine traders.com) all want a rebuildable core exchange...which I don't have. Does anyone know if there are other Yanmar, non-marine short blocks which can be substituted and the peripherals (exhaust manifold, diesel induction system, water pump and whatever else) from my engine added?

Re: Engine switch

AFAIK the engine is a Yanmar tractor engine. Seems like you could find out what it's tractor designation is and look for the block fhere. Why don't you rebuild it yourself or hire a diesel mechanic to do it. If it's only a cracked block, you could just take everything on your engine and swap it into a new block. I wouldn't advise that unless cheap is your whole being. Probably best to put in new pistons and a valve job at the minimum. The rest of it is new bearings and reassembly.

What's the core charge? About 5-800 bucks?

Re: Engine switch

You could just buy a good used engine. Which 3GM do you have??? I know where there is a good 3GM-20 that you can get for around $3000.

Core charge is universally $1,000 but that's not the whole issue. In some cases they cannot rebuild (Mack) unless they get the block.

Re: Engine Switch

Beta Marine sells marinized Kubota engines that will match any Yanmar engine. A new 30 hp engine was about $6,000 a couple of years ago, about the same as a Mack Boring remanned engine.

Re: Engine Switch

Your price for the Beta are probably a bit out of date. I checked on their smallest engine, a 2 cylinder, for a small sailboat and they were giving boat show special pricing at close to $6K.
