Re: Engine starts only with air cleaner removed

It sounds like what you have there is a common gas engine spark arrestor. Maybe it got transferred from the Atomic 4 to the diesel when It got put in. You really dont need anthing more on an inboard diesel.

So are you recommending going without an air filter or just making a statement? Would you consider adding an air filter after reading this thread?

My engine (Volvo diesel) has an air filter. I suppose it came that way but I know replacements are available and listed in the parts list. I sleep well at night knowing it's protecting my engine.

Yeah, but without an air filter you can get rid of the roaches.....

The Perkins prima m50 on the amel santorin has the same intake silencer attached to a 50 cm corrugated tube. There is also a tube connecting with the oil filler stack, which delivers a small amount of oil to coat the corrugated tube. This in effect creates an oil bath filter catching most, if not all airborne particles. The system has worked fine for 21 years, the Lump has about 6000 hours up on the clock and going well.
