engine stalls when put in gear

I have a Volvo Penta model 2003. Wind died an I had to shift to motoring. While motoring engine would not run above 2000 RPMs. I was only getting 3 knots vice the usual 5 or so. I anchored and checked the prop and shaft. Everything was clear. Started back up and everything ran normal until I put back in gear then same issue.

I continued to the Anchorage, spent the might. I have checked fuel filters, bled lines. Engine starts fine. Has full range of RPMs in neutral, but stalls when I put in gear. Fluids are good an shaft rotates freely by hand. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: engine stalls when put in gear

Something is binding either in the shaft log (if you have one) or in the transmission (reduction gearbox). I would start by disconnecting the shaft and if the problem is not solved, I would remove the transmission.

Before you do anything more complicated, check your prop and external shaft for rope, fishing line, lobster pots, etc. Also, if your boat has been sitting for a while, you might expect serious barnacle growth on the prop. that could cause a problem.

Check the prop. It may be fouled (weed, rope, etc).

When you start it how high will the RPM's go not in gear. Does the engine still stall? Or just in gear?

I checked the prop and shaft again. No line etc. little but of growth, I had divers clean hill in April. I cleaned prop and shaft.

Started fine, RPMs are fine in neutral, let it warm up, put in gear RPMs drop engine stalls. Tried in forward and reverse same result.

When I start it with the throttle wide open, RPMs go up around 3000 then I back down to about 20 while it gets warm. It Idles around 1300

2000, 1000, 3000? Isn't there a zero too much?
Normal idle would be around 700, at WOT (no gear) around 3600.
If the prop is clean and the shaft turns freely I suspect the gearbox; is there any oil in it?

I couldnt figure out what the problem was. Did some additional reading and came across someone who had a similar issue and the cause was engine was getting enough fuel to run in neutral, but not enough to run under load.

I checked my primary filter, changed secondary, bled system. Started up, put in gear, all good. Thank you for the assistance. Rolling down the river.

1200 idle is already a little high. How long have you had the boat? is it possible the idle has been set high to mask an issue?

I keep our idle @ 1100-1200 so the shakes at idle don't pull the boat apart!!

Re: engine stalls when put in gear

Seems like you got lucky!! Happens sometimes. I had a similar type of problem last year at the beginning of the season. Main engine turned over (apparently normally) but would not start. Initially diagnosed as a faulty fuel solenoid, it turned out to be a dying starter battery. It had enough juice to turn the engine over, but not enough to also activate the solenoid (which could be activated manually).

Agreed, our 2003 tickover is 500 when cold and shakes like a mad thing then settles down to 700 when warm.

Anything else been done to this engine recently? like servicing it? I agree with the suggestion of unbolting the prop from the gearbox if possible. There is probably a roll pin in the joining widget btw which will need drifting out.
