it does matter where you aim... if you aim at the block near the exhaust manifold it will read off the scale... near the fuel injectors will also be high...

the best location to aim the 'infra red' guage is at the base of the temperature sending unit...

I am with others, that you should check it with a infrared temp checker, and check with the motor manual for the proper temp.
Running too hot is bad, but running too cool is not good either.
