Engine reviews Yanmar or Volvo

I am thinking of repowering. I would appreciate reviews of Yanmar and Volvo. These engines are readily available in Brisbane Australia. Which to choose? Comments about reliability, after sale service, and parts needed.

I can tell you Volvo very expensive for parts from Volvo ! If however the motor is made by Perkins (we are talking older models here) the parts are a lot cheaper from Perkins ! Just my 2 cents worth ! We have a Volvo/Perkins, and the prices for most Perkins/Prima parts (I know old motor), but the price difference is mind boggling !

Why limit yourself, Kubota based engines are readily available and comparably inexpensive to repair and maintain.

If I had to repower I would lean towards beta marine..... then yanmar. Current boat and last boat had yanmar engines and I could not be happier.

Betta, Nanni, are Kubota based in that size and I believe they have dealers in that region. Witchards Marine in Sydney (WM Diesel) do an extremely good marinization of various sizes and may well be worth a phone call.

Volvo is referred to as the green death by many.
Kubota is readily available worldwide and parts available online and from farm equipment shops.

Beta BV1803 38 hp 1.8 liter, Beta BV2203 50 hp 2.2 liter. Same block, different bore.

I replaced my Perkins 4-108 with a BV2203 in 2003 and 4000+ hours later I am still happy with the choice. Parts available everywhere from tractor dealers.

My Volvo D2-55F is as smooth as silk. Saildrive turns on a dime, no noticeable prop wash. Now you can get with Webasto AC unit. Run the AC to cool off the cabin and charge the batteries - Goodbye Genset.

Volvos are good, solid engines - but Volvo gets you on the back end on parts and excessively inflated prices - also reportedly (on their new engines), on proprietary software and systems.

I've loved every Yanmar I've ever had on board in 20+ years of sailing. I've also heard very good things about the new Betas - especially since they are not set up with common rail technology, so if you'd like to continue to do your own engine work, it's still a straightforward and accessible set-up.

This. I like Yanmars (not the turbos, however, too complex and unnecessary for me) and I like the Volvos. Both are comparable in terms of build and reliability. But to acquire Volvo spares involves paying the pension of a unionized Swede. Beta/Kubotas are rugged, reliable and take mostly tractor parts. There's a LOT of information on which parts and filters and belts are interchangeable and they are easy to fix if you have the urge to learn or are already handy.

There are few bad marine diesels out there, but there's definitely a difference in cost of ownership in my experience.

I have wery bad experiances with Volvo D2-55.
The corrosion is the big problem between heat exchanger aluminium housing
and Exhoust elbow. Due to galvanic corrosion the Alu Heat exchanger flange at exhoust elbow disappiers, and a hole can be seen within 5-6 years salt water use.
The reparature is wery costly, (Replace heat exch. housing + Exhoust elbow + gaskets costing cca 4000 Euro!
I suggest use Solé diesel, You will never have corrosion problems!
