Engine Replacement Cost Estimate

I'm trying to decide between two boats...one needs the engine replaced. I'm trying to get an estimate on how much a replacement engine, installed, will cost. Not much info available online, and I've not gotten a reply from either business I've contacted. Is there a rule of thumb for estimating this? Can anyone give an estimate on a cost per HP? Or what an approximately 40HP engine will cost? And approximate installation cost?

Any guesstimate would be appreciated!

Tar dog,
you should be looking somewhere in the region of $5-$7K for the motor, plus $3-5K for the install and all the other little bits and pieces.

Get a quote from an installer. I don't understand why they would not call you back if they want your business. Its not necessary to guess.

From what I have seen over the years, a good rule of thumb is it will cost you the price of the engine plus another 50% for the labor and other materials that need to be replaced. This is assuming you do not need to make any major changes to the engine bed.

Tardog,

Where did you find the boats at? Just curious, because of the thread on the broker.

You need to provide a little more info

Wht kind of engine is in there now?

If possible try to find an engine with the same "footprint".

Keep in mind that an engine installation will(may) involve new exhaust, fuel, control lines as well as instrumentation.

What is the condition of the existing engine?

you asked for a guess

now the real answer
It depends, yes, it depends.
What is the hull? what engine is in there now? v-drive, saildrive, straight drive? what rotation prop? what's the current condition of the fuel system? exhaust system? controls? Where is the boat? what resources are near? will it be a local installer or will you import a tech? will you do some of the work? or none of the work?

It's not at all like saying I have a 1992 Honda Civic, how much is a new motor.

40hp starts @ 7k and go over 10k just for the engine, gear, panel and harness.
Does the boat need 40hp? or would 30 do it just fine.
Too many questions to just jump in with assumptions.

As noted it's the details of the install and all the goodies that are attached. Engines don't come with all the accessories. Actually they don't come with much of anything. Many vendors can put together a replacement that can reuse a lot of what you have but it's all about the details.

Thanks for the info, guys. I'm just trying to get a ballpark price, which I did...somewhere between $10K and $1.5M.

You never did say what kind of enn-jine you have in there.

It would aid in giving a closer price.

Include some pics of the engine compartment too.

There's a 30HP Yanmar in there, which I believe in inadequate for the boat. According to Nigel Calder, the formula he developed would call for about 41hp. Again, I'm deciding between two boats-one with an underpowered old engine and one with a relatively new, appropriately powered engine.

Thanks again for the estimates.

There is a rule of thumb with repowers. You work on the new purchase price of the engine and the same amount should cover fitting. That's a pretty close questimate and one that often becomes the most accurate. The pieces of string are things like props, couplings, engine bearers, exhaust, water and so on and so on. It's never as straight forward as it initially looks and it is the wee things that are over looked that often sting the hardest. Ever bought engine mounts lately? What is it with those and their cost?

your welcome to call me. I'd like to know more about the boat before saying it's underpowered.
