Engine R&R Hours

Have to have the yard put a "new" rebuilt Yanmar 3GM20 in for the one that just self destructed. It's a 34 footer with restricted engine access, especially to the rear. Anybody have a feel for how many hours it'll take to remove the old one and replace it with the new one? As always, thanks in advance.

If you didn't get an estimate...prepare to be at the boat the whole time they do the job and log the hours.

Taking an engine out can be a long days work depending on wht needs to be disassembled.

If there is anything you can take out....do it

Should take two guys a day to pull it and a day to replace it, but get a fixed price if you can. I could sing you songs of woe all night long about what happens in boatyards. Basically they get prisoners on work release for $2/hr from the state and charge you $100/hr while they learn how to use a screwdriver.

A friend of ours has just taken out and replaced same/same unit all within one day's work. It is all dependent on how tight the installation is and how difficult it is to move the engine to a place where it can be lifted off.

Plenty of pre-planning will save plenty of wasted time.
