Engine Pan on Pearson 422

Hi Everyone,

A friend of mine owns a Pearson 422, cutter rigged, center cockpit. The fiberglass engine supports on the starboard side of the pan have broken down. We need to get the engine out of the way to rebuild the pan.
We are considering an A frame to lift the engine and move it to the aft bunk while we rebuild the pan.
Anyoyone with any insight on pulling the engine out of a Pearson 422 please share your knowledge. There seems to be absolutely no way to get a crane on it where it sits without cutting out the deck in the cockpit.

s there a way to place a piston jack under it and raise it a lil???? could be an option...

Interesting timing. I jacked up the engine in my 422 yesterday to replace the motor mounts. Perhaps I should say hoisted since I could not see an easy way to get a jack anywhere under or beside the engine so used a chain hoist and a come-along to lift it up.

Just saw another 422 with the same problem but on the port side. What hull number is this one?

The fit is pretty tight and not sure if the engine would fit through the door into the aft cabin. I believe the cabinet work in the main cabin will unscrew and remove so you can slide the engine forward. The engine room is pretty tall. I might consider raising the engine high enough to work under it.

Are you planning to disconnect the tranny and/or V drive?

Forgot to mention, when I bought my boat the PO mentioned that a few years back he spoke with a guy that used to work at the Pearson plant and was offering a flat rate rebuild/upgrade for the 422s including a new engine. This guy cut the floor out of the cockpit, hoisted the engine straight up and glassed it back together after the new engine was installed.

A very simple way -
#1 is to drill a couple of small diameter hole down through the deck so that they are above lifting points on the engine.
#2 Then insert 2 steel cables and attach them to the engine with bulldog clamps.
#3 Arrange appropriate lifting gear on the cockpit side - boom etc - attach
the steel cables and lift the engine out of the way and block it.
#4 When repairs completed - return engine to its mounts - align correctlly with Prop shaft.
#5 Remove steel lifting cables - fill the small holes with white epoxy.
