Question Engine Oil in Saildrive ?

During spring service a Volvo Penta mechanic filled our SailDrive with Diesel engine oil (15W40 grade) instead of ATF oil. He claimed, that he received a service bulletin from Volvo permitting this. However, was reluctant to produce anything on paper. To me it seemed strange, as the composition and viscosity of both fluids is quite different.

My question is, does anyone know about such recommendation from Volvo Penta?

The SailDrive is a year old and I think it is the ZF 10 unit made for Volvo by ZF.

MRM,

Yes, your mechanic is correct. 15w40 is what you use now.
Here is all the info and bulletins.

a ZF 10 would be a regular marine transmission.

A quote from ZF Friedrichshafen AG | Startseite | Antriebstechnik und Fahrwerktechnik "Two different models of the Sail Drive are available: the ZF SD 10 for up to 150 Nm (75 hp @3600 rpm) and the ZF SD 12 up to 180 Nm (92 hp @3600rpm)".

Since I was specifically asking about oil in Sail Drive I thought that the context was clear and omitted the 'SD' designation.
