Nanni are pirates but for true extortion you gotta try the Westerbeke pr&#ks

Re: Engine hours: Too many? Too few?

Most of the accessories like heat exchangers, manifolds, engine mounts and such are available as aftermarket parts or can be fabricated by yourself. I'm not poor but I am frugal and I despise giving money to rip off marine companies. I agree Westerbeke is a prime example, way overpriced for stuff you can get elsewhere. These companies with the exception of Yanmar don't make their own engines, Westerbeke uses mostly Mitsubishi and Beta, Universal and Nanni mostly Kubota. I have a Lister Petter in the boat I'm building but I've had Listers for years and have sources for parts for these great little engines.

Boat B is a saltwater boat, has 2,400 hours on the engine.

Is an average of 25 hours a year enough to keep it from rusting out?
Is 2,400 hours getting close to end of life / nearing major maintenance?
Price considerations if I make an offer?

Obviously there is some data missing, for example the 250 hours could be in 2008 and it hasn't ran since. But can anything else be said of the engines? Are there specific questions to ask / things to check in each case?

Thanks,

RR
FYI. Mine has a Yanmar, 3 cyl. At 3000 hours I just put a new fuel supply pump. ( Routine oil sample showed a little fuel in the oil, diaphragm leak) at 2000 I scheduled injector service, and heat exchanger preventive service, replaced exhaust elbow. I fully expect another 3000 hours out of it.
Test run it at full throttle and, with a clean bottom, the room should be right about 90% of the high idle spec. That's an indication of whether the prop is overloading the engine.
