Engine Hoses

I am replacing all the hoses on the engine. Most are custom bent and shaped hoses that I bought from the Westerbeke dealer but there are a couple of just straight pieces of hose that are not part of the kit that I was going to buy at the local auto parts store. But the old hoses are wire reinforced and I have not been able to find this type at all. Local NAPA store said they haven't seen wire reinforced hose in years.

At least one hose is on the suction side of a pump and I am concerned that the vacuum might collapse the hose. Is the reinforced hose (but without wire) OK or should I try to track down the wired hose?

I had a similar situation about 2 years ago........I used some of the white (3/4") sanitation type hose on my air conditioner intake line, ahead of the pump for cooling circuit. The old wire reinforced hose had rotted through and was leaking. The sanitation type hose is relitively ridged and does not show any signs of collapsing. I would NOT use it in a situation where hot fluids are being used.

It's not cheap but considering it'll last 10-20 years......

I use Moreland hose in Hempstead, NY.

I show up withan engine hose and they match it. They even let me watch how the ends are crimped on.

If you can't find what you need locally, I'd be glad to ship you what ever you need. I stock Trident Hose in both Hard Wall (with wire) and Soft Wall (without wire). We can probably even come up with a Cruisers Forum discount.

Well as strange as it may seem, even though I am in Florida I am in the only place in the state, if not the whole eastern US, where it is a 2 hour drive to the nearest West Marine.

So, for my refit I either find auto parts and Home Depot stuff that is suitable or if a critical application, I mail order.

Thank you very much for the offer. Since I only needed a 9" piece of what I thought is a fairly standard item I was hoping to find it locally. If I strike out will take you up on it if you don't mind shipping a couple of dollars worth of hose.

By the way, was thinking about going down to the Dania marine flea market on the 15th. Will you be there?

Any good green stripe or blue stripe marine hose should be wire reinforced. As far as little formed elbow hoses etc that arent wire reinforced, a good auto parts store like NAPA has a gazillion of them. JUst match up the size and bend angle and cut to fit. Much cheaper than the Diesel engine dealer.

Thanks for the tip on the elbow hoses. Are you sure parts from NAPA will be cheaper than parts from a marine diesel dealer?

Finally ended up ordering the reinforced hose from a marine diesel dealer. Could not find it anywhere in town. $#!$@#$!!!

No, not sure really! But usually the case!

I'd be glad to ship an inch or a mile. If it is a short and straight hose, you probably don't need wire reinforced. I'd use good heavy duty soft wall. It will last longer than the hard wall and it's cheaper. I use hard wall if it's a long run or has bends in it and it's a suction hose. Hard wall hose usually fails when the wire inside rusts. What size do you need?
We won't have a booth at the flea market this year. If you ever get down to Miami, stop in. I'll buy the coffee!

Went ahead and ordered some from the Westerbeke dealer where I had to order a couple of gaskets anyway. Only needed 9-10" so what the heck.

May come down a day early to look at some solar panels in Miami. If I do I will certainly come by.
