Engine equivalencies - Perkins Prima M80T and Volvo TMD22P?

Hi. I've heard that the Volvo TMD22 is a rebadged Perkin M80T, after Caterpillar bought Perkins in the '90s and forbade them to sell marinized diesel engines. Is this true, and if so, can one buy Volvo-branded parts to use on the Perkins? Or - is the Perkins an orphan engine that can be a nightmare to get parts for and repair - as a marine mechanic warned me? Thank you for any answers/information.
