Engine Control Problem

Hello,

Problem: During the 2009 boating season, my Oday 27 sailboat ran into a snag. The engine controls, for throttle and shift were seemingly sticky, not operating smooth into gear and the throttle wasn't working well. It felt like it was tight. (the red lever -forward/neutral/reverse and the black lever for throttle)

The dual levers seemed to always want to move together, instead of seperate and independently. Amid trying to remove the cover and trying to unstick the dual engine control handles, the center bolt sheared off. Now i can't get it back together without removing the entire interior pieces and somehow pop out the center bolt and replace it.

Plus, the engine controls frame which is mounted under the starboard cockpit seatee, seems to have always moved back and forth when i used the throttle or putting the Atomic 4 engine into gear.

Question: Can i replace this system with a single lever engine control ? and what single lever, side mounted dual control engine control be best suited for a sailboat?

Mark

If you have an Atomic 4 in your boat you will probably need to go with a Teleflex#044716-001....List is $540.00

The gear lever on the A-4 needs a large cable and the leverage of the handle.

I think you should look at repair before replacement.

If the frame moves...that's not unusual....there is a lot of stress put on these units and they are usually installed poorly...(cheaply)

One big giveaway with your situation is this.....RED is for throttle
Black is for shifter.

Somebody hooked the cables up w-r-o-n-g

Engine shifter problem

I was thinking this wasn't set up right with the shifters.

So is the center bolt an easy fix? I've refit my prior boat wiring/plumbing but never messed with the engine controls, shifters or mechanicl stuff to this point.

I would prefer a repair to make it function smoothly for both shifters but i am also drawn also to the idea of having a side mounthed single shifter control for both throttle and forward/reverse..

Ideas on repairing that center sheared bolt? Gonna have to tear apart the whole setup?

Atomic 4 engine controls

Has anyone ever replaced their side mounted engine controls from a dual shifter to a single shifter system?

Example, from my current set-up (see prior pics), to a shifter like the Teleflex CH Series Premium Engine Side-Mount Control CH1750P or the TELEFLEX SL-3 Controls side mount# 309474 ????

Just wanting insight.

I use to have the double lever just like what you have. I hated it especially when I had to bend over to shift or catch my pant leg on the throttle. I went to a single shifter/throttle mounted to the pedestal. Now docking is so much betta. Do you have a pedestal?

As for being loose mounted, there are (4) #10-32 screws that hold it to the bulkhead. Check the holes and the nuts.

There are several models of single lever controls on the market. One would need more detail to know which would be best.

I can supply more pics of the engine control set up. You stated some things i don't like about the duel shift engine controls.

Thoughts?
