Re: Engine clean out

What engine? Raw water cooled or through a heat exchanger?

Re: Engine clean out

Might also check for zincs in the engine and change those... Not sure on that engine but Yanmars have up to 3 zincs on RWCs

In addition to the foregoing, recirculate SaltAway through your system. Counter flow: in the discharge end, out the input end.

Using Salt Away. Highly recommended from a local yard. Figure it can't hurt and is easy enough to do when ever the boat is laid up for a while.

Did you let it sit in the engine for any length of time or just pumped it through. ?

Re: Engine clean out

I used a pump in a bucket and recirculated it through the raw water side from the heat exchanger intake to the hose going back into the exhaust rider. Then I filled the hose from the through hull from above the water line and closed the seacock to complete the raw water clean out. Then I diluted it 50% with water and flushed the engine. Drain and fill run engine till hot. Repeat until clear.

I would be very circumspect about using an etching compound on the water chambers which need be maintained as smooth as reasonably possible to prevent over rapid build up of salt/silt/scale deposits and an environment conducive to marine growth when the engine isn't running (which is most of the time). The Barnacle Buster/RydLyme and SaltAway are effective at cleaning without the danger eroding the surfaces of the galleries. The minor cost savings of using aggressive alternatives may be a case of Penny Wise/Pound Foolish IMHO.

Humm... Right you are. I wonder about the relative concentrations but the Material Safety Data for the product certainly confirms your information so I stand corrected/better informed.

Re: Engine clean out

Yeah. I researched this prior to going with the Home Depot stuff. It works great.

Re: Engine clean out

I've never done this to my engine(s), but sounds like something I should.

What sort of pump did you use?

Thanks!
