Edson Pedestal Yanmar Transmission
I have a customer that installed an Edson Pedestal...Vessel has a Yanmar Engine....He hooked up the shifter cable.....forward is reverse and reverse is forward.....the cable canno be switched at the pedestal and the bracket on the transmission only allows the cable to be mounted one way.
Edson and Yanmar have been no help.
Edson seemed like they had never heard of this situation..although I have seen it on three other occasions.....the customers there just put up with the reverse operation and ignored the markings on the handle.....
Anybody have a solution?......I have faith that the board has a suggestion

Fab a new mount for the transmission? It's just a piece of steel with a few holes to mount to transmission and to clamp the cable sheath.

The shifter cable end should be mounted above the engine shifter lever pivot.

A buddy of mine had a Tartan 28 that came from the factory that way. He STILL has a problem with the wrong gear on any other sailboat.

Can the lever on the trans be turned 180? I cant remember the inside of my Edsons, it's definitely not reversible in there huh?

I have a LN41 that the PO had a new Yanmar installed in '03 and have the exact same problem. At first I thought that fabricating a new bracket on the transmission might be the answer but after inspecting it that won't work unless you can reverse the arm on the shaft, and I don't have enough room to do that.
Maybe an intermediate bracket/shift arm to correct the direction would work, but I would rather purchase a proven design if one was available.
After using a shifter the conventional way for the past 40 years getting used to using it in the opposite direction has been exciting to say the least while docking!

Some Edson Pedestals have the shift axle in the middle of the pedestal with two points that are usable...forward of the axle and aft of the axle.
This Pedestal has the shifter axle in the forward 1/3 of the pedestal and only one point to connect to.

I bought my Edson pedestal in 2005 and the shifter on it is reversible by switching sides on the shifter. The lever in the middle is for the throttle.

Here's the picture.
remove bracket...make template for holes...center punch for holes...drill.....
affix aluminum or steel plate as shown in picture...drill holes for bracket and cable
tiedown.....
The lever on the transmission cannot be switched as it is offset.....this means you have to tighten the bolt from the backside.....I also ground down the end of the lever to ensure there would e no binding against bell housing

I also have an Edson pedestal-Yanmar combo. But with a different problem: it is hard to put in neutral and I keep going from fwr to rev. It does not make it easy for docking !
What should I check first?

Chief,
Thanks for the post! I will take a look at my setup later and see how your solution fits.

Nicely done Chief. Take a day off now.
BTW.. Chief did a great job on my boat. And let me tell you it was a bugger getting down to the gear box to make the change. The only casualty was a nonwaterproof flashlight that found the bottom of the bilge.
