I did easily smell it the one time the engine overheated. It's hard to miss when it steams out but the leak I had was a slow, liquid trickle that didn't really smell.

You could have a leak in the Heat Exchanger. Any coolant leaking would exit through the mixing elbow and exhaust. I think there are 2 heat exchangers on that engine, the other being for either the oil or transmission.

A partially clogged HX would also explain the running hot issue. The only way to determine with certainty if the problem is either of the HX is to remove and pressure check them.
