dipstick

The GEARBOX dipstick of my Yanmar 3YM20 shows no upper limit. Can someone please help?

Re: dipstick

I was just about to climb into the locker and check mine so could send a picture shortly (or send me a PM to remind me). It's really hard to see, but as I recall, it's not much above the bottom on the dip stick.

Re: dipstick

beirutsailor,

If there's only one line, fill it to just there. Sometimes, it helps to hold something white in back of the dipstick, to help you see the ATF on the shiny metal background.

Re: dipstick

When you find the line you might want to etch it a little bit deeper or wider so that it's easy to see. And worst case, talk to a yanmar distributor, or order a new one. Though the info has to be in one of the manuals, even if but in the big mechanic's only version.

You can also drain the fluids, refill things with the specified amount, & see where that brings things to on the dipstick. Though keep in mind that there are a few setups out there where you actually are supposed to check the level when things are hot. As in it's been running recently.

Re: dipstick

I have broken the gear box dipstick twice on my Yanmar 3GM30F diesel. I have learned to not tighten it too hard or it fractures. Very frustrating and expensive to replace.

Re: dipstick

Here's a picture of mine. It's a 3GM30 with a Kawsaki (?) transmission. You may barely be able to see the line at the bottom. My transmission oil is so clear I always have a hard time knowing whether the oil is on that line or not.

Re: dipstick

Yep same as our dipstick. Fill to the line.
