Diesel Won't Start After Filter Change

I'm just glad you got it running. That had to be a huge relief.

That black stuff looks like carbon out of the exhaust system. has anyone been working on it and maybe dumped it out on there as they were moving parts around in the past. You could have a pin hole leak in the exhaust pipe and it is shooting carbon on one spot. But that would mean your engine is making a lot of black stuff which points at worn rings and such.

So, I got just got her running. As it turns out the pin on the injector pump that controls the throttle was stuck. I pulled the injector pump, which was stuck, because the pin was stuck in "stop" mode, the pin needs to be in idle position to pass through a slot in the housing and separate from the block.

I tapped the pin with a punch to get it to the right place, the injector pump came right out. I soaked the pin with wd40 and slid it back and forth until it moved freely. Put the injector pump back on, rebled the system, cranked and finally saw diesel spurting out of the injector pump. Put the fuel lines back on and she started right up and ran perfectly.

For anyone with a universal diesel, this should be part of trouble shooting fuel delivery problems. I just saw a youtube video of the same issue on a Kubota tractor engine.

I'm still trying to figure out what the black stuff is on top of my block?? I'm thinking it might be a leak in the injector or something.

In regards to the black stuff. In the first photo you posted it looks like something that was spilled on the engine. Whoever did it, poor form to paint over it.

However - if the paint has been there a while it indicates whatever it is the engine isn't making any more. I doubt it is something coming from injectors.

Personally, I would clean it up, run it a while and check, back later.

I had the same problem. I had a local marine mechanic come out and he bled the system. Motor still wouldn't start. The problem was a bad fuel line at the first connection off the tank, before the racor's. Line was cracked and would suck air into the system but sealed enough that we couldn't see any diesel leaking. Fixed the connection and it started right up.

I had that same black tar looking stuff all around one injector.It looked like a fuel leak that just baked the fuel and actually ran down the side of the engine. I replaced the injector and it's copper washer and the leak/tar situation is gone.

Yes, it's the copper crush washer. I had the same outcome. I'm surprised it's not more common.
