Diesel Purge?

Hi:

I'm soon to be a new owner of a boat with an older diesel. We're looking at 1980s-1990s 45ish foot cutters.

I've owned and worked on 1980s Mercedes diesels for 13 years. 300TD with a 5-liter turbocharged motor to be precise. One thing we do periodically is to do a cleaning with diesel purge. https://www.enginebuildermag.com/201...-diesel-purge/ It works wonders cleaning out the injection system.

I did some searching in the forums and didn't see any mention of diesel purge.

Do you guys do this or something similar as part of your diesel maintenance on your yachts?

Diesel Purge?

What you talking about is actually an injector cleaner, there are many, many sold. I’m a fan of Chevron’s Techron as I’ve seen it work well.

So to answer your question I’m sure some do, there are all kinds of fuel additives sold.
However I believe your better served by pulling your injectors and having them tested and cleaned. Magic chemicals in the fuel can do very little in actuality, to really clean varnish off takes physical cleaning.

I’ve worked on many of Mercedes Diesels myself from the 220 to the 300D non turbo and the 300TD turbo, I owned them. We even had a 300 CD for awhile which was sort of a joke really, a two door “sporty” Diesel

If you use injector cleaner, it’s best to use it in the tank before oil changes as it can wash some varnish and carbon into the oil.
Those that work anyway, most I believe are snake oil.

Re: Diesel Purge?

The way I do this is with a separate container that bypasses the fuel tank. So rather than adding to the fuel tank, I use a quart sized plastic bottle with a supply and return hose in it. Then I run up and down the street until the bottle is almost dry.

Re: Diesel Purge?

When I change my primary fuel filter I fill it up with injector cleaner. Easier than trying to use diesel, less messy, no drips. 32 year old engine with 3600 hours.
