diesel injector

I have a sailboat with a Volvo Penta MD7B that is very hard to start. I was going to remove the fuel injectors to get them checked, but do I need any special tools to get them out?

Re: diesel injector

Technically, no... but moisture in the engine compartment allowed to settle on top of the engine has a tendency to cause the injectors to become rather stubborn to remove, yes it happens to all diesels, but more problematic with Volvo that uses copper sleeves to seal between the injector and head and subsequently the cooling water of the head; a frozen injector may result in a difficult removal situation, which in-turn may result in dislodging the copper sleeve which seals the head. Removal and installation of the copper sleeves does require a couple of "special" model specific tools.

Re: diesel injector

Thank You ! I removed the studs and soaked the area with Crc products. With studs off I could try to turn carefully. The aft one came out after some movement, but the forward not. Here the cupper sleeve loosend !
And the sleeve is fixed om the injector!!

Re: diesel injector

Really sorry to hear that.... The sleeve not only acts as the injector seal, it also isolates the water jacket from the injector port. Only real choice now is to pull the head and haul it to the shop. Might as well have the valves and seals checked at the same time..

Once again sad to hear the worst possible results. One of the reasons the md7 s are not real well liked.

Re: diesel injector

Bummer. I had the same problem with a Volvo 2003. Had to pull the head, get new gaskets and sleeves, and the machine shop had to fabricate a tool to install the sleeves, as the Volvo tool was not available. As Capt-C says, do the valves while the head is off.
