Diesel Fuel Tanks

I have recently purchased a 1980 Chris Craft Commander 45' twin Detroits 350 hp with 2 250 gal tanks. Does anyone know what metal the tanks were made of. One has been near empty for over 3 years and fuel from that tank plugs filter. Need ideas on how to solve problem.

What is it plugging the filter with? Bio matter or something else?

I would have the fuel tanks polished while they are still faily empty as they will have to pull all the fuel out to do the job.Less fuel more money in your pocket. If you hit rough weather tjis could stir up and sediments in the tank and I don't know about you but I would not want to be changing a fuel filter heaving 5 or 6 meters.Good luck cruising.

Re: Diesel fuel tanks

Seems to be a dark gloop material, not sure if there is other matter in it as well. Had no way to fine filter it at the time other than the 1 micron fuel filter installed.

Re: Diesel fuel tanks

I'd have the fuel sucked out, polished and the tanks cleaned as well as you can while still in place. Check for leaks and run some more fuel from it while watching the filters. Could just be organic growth got into the fuel and not a problem with the tank itself.

Re: Diesel fuel tanks

Thanks Jeff, the mess was stired up when I took it out and came back in on one engine due to starboard one shutting down from filter blockage. Drained it at marina next day.

Re: Diesel Fuel Tanks

btw Welcome to Cruisers Forum Capt Allan. While it might not seem too nice to just direct you elsewhere after your first few posts here..... You might want to check out:
Chris Craft Commander Forum
and
Chris Craft Commander Club

They might have specific info to help you out on what type of tanks you have. If they're metal, then my bet would be on aluminum from a 1980.
