this one is a shot from last October!...... been sick ever since.

Well I had to cut short the trip to Arran as the flu like symptoms re-occurred on Wednesday morning and it made the walk up Glen Rosa almost impossible. So I never made it to the peak of Cir Mhor. I was coughing almost non-stop and couldn't keep up with having to blow my nose. I decided to phone for a doctors appointment and caught the first ferry back to the mainland on Thursday morning. Now I'm booked in for more blood tests to establish if it's allergens, pathogens or indeed the pneumonia or flu vaccinations last October have been the catalyst for all this trouble. It will be a month before the tests are complete.

Is it possible that you are smoking no more than before but your beautiful and labor intensive wax job is catching more of the exhaust soot?

Re: Diesel Fuel Causing Soot?

Todays diesel does not burn as well as diesel years ago. People are having soot troubles with diesel stoves that ran clean before the change. One option is #1 diesel if available. This winter I started using Archoil fuel catalyst in my diesel truck. Trying it in my boat, I get easier, quicker starts and less smoke when starting, but haven't traveled enough to check mileage. However, in the truck, I recently drove from the Columbia River to Vancouver Island, mostly on 2 lane hwys. I got 25mpg traveling light and not towing. Before I never got above 21mpg. I also can start in weather below freezing w/o using the block heater. The oil remains semi-transparent (less soot).
Archoil.com if you want to read about it.

Yes, very much possible. Certainly makes it more noticeable.

Lol

I went and and asked my go to guy at the mechanics shop and mentioned the Yanmar issue your experiencing Ken...... he is an older guy with a trillion years of experience.....
Pulled the pipe out of his mouth and coughed as I repeated what you wrote here. After he spat on the floor and replaced the pipe he said.....

'So whats the problem? Fuels crap these days, the engine is starting up and running with good compression and it puffs out a bit o' sooty stuff" Id say he 'as a good 'un." and walked off.

Re: Diesel Fuel Causing Soot?

Your exhaust is cleaned (scrubbed) by water wash spray, could be its lost its effectiveness possibly by partial blockage or impeller damage.
I think its odd that your exhaust leaves the vessel below water level, maybe cosmetic intention but not great for exhaust back pressure.
Modern diesels should be cleaner due to epa requirements, they do this by higher injection pressure that should give better mix in the combustion chamber, possibly more temperamental to poorer fuel, a Marine Engineer colleage suggests more regular oil change for more modern common rail diesels, something to do with lacquer deposits.
We clean turbos with water wash of compressor and walnut shells to turbine on commercial vessels.
You only need one bad injector for extreme sooty exhaust, I so love monitoring of exhaust temps but thats only feasible on larger engines.
However I wouldn't necessary say that you should to do anything different. Its working, there is probably nothing wrong.

Re: Diesel Fuel Causing Soot?

He has a water separator, so his exhaust doesn't exit underwater - only the water part of it. The back pressure the engine sees is only from the exhaust outlet above the water, as the water leaves through gravity. Technically, his back pressure should be slightly lower with the separator.

Re: Diesel Fuel Causing Soot?

I had this very problem here in California; diesel Excursion runs great, very little soot. Boat runs great, soot. Both are ULS fuel. However, asking the boat dock about this, I was told that boat diesel doesn't have to be the same Cetane rating. Highway Cetane is 53 in California, boat can be as low as 44 (or so I was told). I started using stanadyne additives, and got lower consumption and less soot. But still some soot. As far as I know, the best diesels soot, unless you have a particulate scrubber, like on all the new car diesels.

Re: Diesel Fuel Causing Soot?

It might be the fuel. US jets in Vietnam smoked. Do rule not rule out low compression, faulty injector or engine tune. Jenset under load or just charging batteries? A cetain booster or diesel additive is usually a good practices unless your marine diesel already has it.

Re: Diesel Fuel Causing Soot?

I always make sure the genset is run under load, never to just charge the batteries. Usually, I have both watermakers turned on along with the hot water tank, fuel polisher and induction stove. Almost always starts out trying to also satisfy the English electric water boiler tea pot.

I couldn't find the dog either? Diesels smoke! Have you checked the air intake filters, running rich will do it. Sorry it that sounds sophomoric but often the obvious is forgotten.
