Cost of Engine Overhaul

Yanmar 2GM20, out of boat... Needs new piston rings, head gasket and general overhaul. They are at 4500 hours, so its time anyways.

Not including parts - whats a reasonable amount for labour for such work? I realize it will vary between locations....

You can save some significant labor charges by removing engine yourself and separating the head and block. I just got a quote from a local machine shop that they will do a valve job on a 3 cylinder head for $100.

Check to see if your engine has cylinder liners. If so, the piston, rings, and bearing replacement is pretty easy since you don't have to bore out the block for oversize pistons/rings. I helped a friend rebuild a Yanmar with cylinders liners, rings, bearings, head gasket etc and its not a difficult job.

Suggest you find a local machine shop and get an estimate for just the rebuild portion of job and you might be pleasantly surprised. Your mechanic is likely subcontracting a machine shop to do the rebuild anyway.

I had my perkins 4.236 totally overhauled last June out of boat and this is what it cost me

labour ; 3200 euros for this they removed the saloon plexi glass crane truck hire also the cost of service and repair to starter and two 85amp alternators and refitted and did realignment

engine parts 856.00 euros ( pistons liners rings caskets cylinder head parts the full works)

when the engine was stripped down found the G/box and engine heat exchanger cores where well gone bought two new cores from (serck uk) 532 euros .

i also decided to strip down hurth hsw360a g/box bought all the parts i needed for 386 euros it took me four hrs to do total service on it

also i fitted new prop shaft along with a along with a new aqua drive shaft , and a tides shaft seal kit costs for these where shaft 850 euros ,aqua shaft 320euros and tides seal kit 386 euros .

total cost of repair 6530 euros but if i was to put a brand new perkins engine in it would of come to 17600 euros

There is a diesel mechanic from Guyana who comes highly recommended and I've been really happy with so far. He's got the engine all apart and ready just waiting for they parts. We took the engine out by dinghy (no fun)... will go back in using the marina.... Then will take the other engine out once this one goes back in.

Maybe rebuild isn't the right word... The engine is in good shape and we are replacing piston rings, bearings, head gaskets and other maintenance. I'm going through the service manual now, but it looks like we are getting all the important items.

I recently o/hauled my 3 gm30.I did all work myself [very simple engine]-replaced pistons, rings, cyl liners, main and rod bearings annodes and all inj. seals and gaskets. Had valve job done-85.00.Entire job cost me about 1200.00

When I was in Australia I casually asked the Yanmar mechanic in Sydney how much to change the bearings (I had heard some horror story about ex-charter boats).

The mechanic did a bit of figuring and rang me back and said AU$13,000 (USD$12,000; EUR9,000).

Other Yanmar mechanics have told me "Keep the oil up to it and it'll be fine for 25,000 hours".

So my question to others who suggest they need their engines rebuilt is why do they think they need a 'rebuild'? And what is a 'rebuild' anyway?

Other words I've heard are "Zero hour the engine". Whats that? Before selling changing the hour meter?

Brians figures of US$3 to 4,000 plus (say) $1,000 parts is much more like it.

Mine need it.. rings and head gaskets are shot! It stopped starting due to lack of compression, and used to spit oil out the exhaust above 2500 rpm.....
