Confusing Volvo MD7A Reverse Gear Cooling Water Drain

Thanks for the help in advance.

I am confused by my Volvo Penta MD7A's reverse gear cooling water drain.

I bought a permanent "hose drain kit" to attach to my reverse gear cooling water drain.

When I went to install it in the hole that used to hold the cooling water drain plug there was only metal. The drain plug hole did not go anywhere. See the pics.

My only guess is there are holes in the sides of the threads??? Or that there is a hole in the middle of the drain plug hole that is very small???

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Pics are attached.

Re: Confusing Volvo MD7A Reverse Gear Cooling Water Drain

Damned if I know. I had the engine out last year and I did not look at the underside of the transmission.

But I know this, I don't have those two black hoses in your pic either.

And I have a second engine in my basement, that doesn't have any of that either.

Where did yu get that pic of the engine? I don't. Think I've seen that before.

Sorry for the confusion. I should have clarified better.

I took it laying on my belly on the cabin sole holding the camera way back under the engine.

I put those hoses in. They are like the drain hoses people permanently put in place for draining the engine oil.

The bottom of the MD7A engine has 4 different drain plugs that must be removed each winter before lay-up so I just "hosed" them all.

All the hoses I installed have little valves at the end so I can drain the oil and water out of the engine easily each year before lay-up.

Each "hose setup" (drain plug fitting + hose + drain cock fitting) cost me about $25 each at a local hydraulic shop. The hose is water/diesel/oil resistant. So the total bill to hose all 4 drains is about $100.

A picture of the drain cock fitting I installed is attached. I'll take pics of the whole setup tomorrow.

Re: Confusing Volvo MD7A Reverse Gear Cooling Water Drain

I've got this one figured out.

My MD7A reverse gear has TWO water drain plugs. This is not mentioned anywhere in any of Volvo's schematics or manuals.

There is a larger cooling water drain on the bottom of the reverse gear and another one on the starboard right of the reverse gear. The size of the smaller starboard side drain is 1/8-28 BSPP.

AND be careful when you remove these bolts (I just snapped one and am re-tapping the hole. UGH!)

When you remove the drain plugs from these two holes the holes look likes "roads to nowhere" (this is a reference to the locally infamous Road to Nowhere near Bryson City, NC near where I live ). These drain plug holes do not open into the engine like an oil drain hole.

When water is introduced into the reverse gear--if you leave the drain plugs out so you can see what happens, the water actually drains out an opening in the side of the drain plug holes way at the back. Pics attached.

I'll post more pics and exact thread sizes of my drain line setup when I fix the broken bolt problem in a few days. So far my drain cocked oil and water drains work well (no leaks).
