Cleaning Raw Water System with Vinegar

I've heard that filling the CW system of my raw-water-cooled Yanmar 2GM with vinegar then leaving it overnight will dissolve any calcified build-ups.

Is this correct? What if I leave it in there too long? How do I know I won't end up up filling the cylinders with vinegar via the elbow?

Any dilute acid will dissolve calcium.

Vinegar (dilute acetic acid, C2H4O2) dissolves Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3), which reaction (I believe) produces Calcium Acetate, Carbon Dioxide, and Water.

I’m unaware of any problem with allowing the reaction to continue longer than necessary.

Vinegar works fine. Do not try any commercial grade "cleaners' unless you have full control over the process (i.e. do NOT leave overnight).

Has anyone tried "Salt Away"? I use it on my O/B before putting it up.
