Changing Engine Anode - Volvo Penta 2002

I've searched, read the Engine Manual and Workshop Service Manual, couple of Calder's books surprisingly to no avail. What exactly is the process to change the Zinc Anode in the raw water cooled Volvo Penta 2002 Diesel engine? I'm surprised the Volvo manuals mention the anode, show a picture of where it is but make absolutely no mention of how to change it.

Of course unscrew, remove old, screw in new anode.. but what about valve closing, ensuring no air bubbles, cleaning out raw water system, checking impeller? Is there a recommended process?

Appreciate if anyone can offer a bit of a newbies overview. Cheers!

Of course, I think a general synopsis that covers any raw water cooled diesel would suffice. I'm sure it is a fairly generic process.

Fairly certain about closing the raw water intake valve. But then how do I evacuate the lines so as not to get a bilge full of sea water? How to ensure no debris or air in the raw water system?

Any hints, tips, or pointers to recommended manuals or books appreciated.

The raw water side of the 2002 will self bleed. So just turn off the raw water intake, remove old zinc, clean up any spill and rust, replace with new zinc. I'd probably put a small amount of anti-seize on the new zinc threads to make it easier to get out next time (leaving enough raw so that it will still make a good electrical contact with the block). Turn the intake back on, run engine and make sure you have flow out the exhaust.

There is a pencil zinc on the left side (when facing the flywheel). If I remember right it has a square end on it, about 1/2". I used to just unscrew it and replace. Very difficult to find the right size pencil zinc.

Hi Boombrake,

I was wondering if you were able to change the engine anode on your volvo md. I have the same engine on my beneteau and I am having trouble finding good literature about the engine. Do you have a complete list of all the anodes the engine has? Where did you get the service manual for the engine? The only thing I have is a very high level (35 page) workshop manual from Volvo. It is not sufficient for anything .

Looking at the front of the engine (with the fan belt), the anode is on the left hand side and as already explained has a square drive. Water will drain out when the anode is removed so be ready for this.

For what it's worth (my engine is an old Volvo MD30A) I always flush out the raw water system - particularly the heat exchanger - with fresh water when checking or replacing the anode. I don't know how you'd do it on your engine, but I simply remove the pipes from the back of the heat exchanger and flush through with a hose against the normal raw water flow, allowing the water to drain out through the other end of the heat exchanger stack.

If you leave the heat exchanger unflushed for more than 2-3 years the tubes start to block with salt (at least, they do on my Volvo) and cooling efficiency drops dramatically.

When laying up for the winter, I finish by flushing a fresh water/antifreeze mix into the engine and leaving it for the duration. This kills off any marine organisms lurking in the raw water system and is better IMHO than simply draining off the raw water.
