Can Sail-drive Cover be Replaced in Water?

I got some polypropylene netting wrapped around the prop of our lagoon 470. Somehow it ripped off half of the sail-drive cover. The cover is a 2mm thick PVC(?) sheeting cut to fit around the drive and glued and screwed in place. Underneath is a piece of black rubber sheet which is now flapping freely from the uncovered half. No apparent loss of oil.

Questions:
How bad is this?
Can a new cover be installed in the water (ie some sea water will be trapped underneath), or does the boat have to be pulled?
If so, what sealant and how to drive screws?

Unfortunately, I didn't see anyony answering whether the cover could be replaced with the boat in the water, and whether it was major problem not to have a cover on.

I believe you are talking about the cover glued and screwed to the outside hull with a slot that the sail drive protrudes through. If this is the case changing it underwater is a pain only because I worry more about properly sealing the screws into the hull. I used to buy these directly from Yanmar. Now I just buy heavy floor matting and cut it to shape with a heavy pair of shears and replace it once I pull the boat each year or so. The sail drive double seal located where the sail drive penetrates the boat just a few inches under the oil fill cap is another story.

PS I've run mine without the cover for months with no issues at all except a bit of growth I have to scrape off further up in the sail drive cavity.

I am talking about the cover glued and screwed to the outside hull. I'll wait until I pull it, or at least until I am somewhere with more technical back-up than Kuna Yala.

No problem. But for the record, I hate those things. Each time one of them gets torn off or breaks away I go a little longer between changes with zero problems.

I used to change out the rubber boot on my Yanmar SD20 saildrive every year or 2, was always a problem however I fastened it.
When I installed my new folding prop in 2007, my Yanmar
dealer said to use Boat Life "Life Seal" to adhere
the boot to the hull. I installed it while the boat was hauled
but I remember being told that it cures better wet...maybe
OK to install under water???? Check with Boat Life for under water install.
By the way that same boot is in place like the day it was installed. I consider this a minor miracle, considering the
the problems getting boots to adhere prior to using lifer seal.

Somewhat delayed response:

We finally hauled our boat. The side that has lost its piece of linoleum covering (that I originally posted about) held up well. However, the other side has the linoleum, but no rubber boot and seawater has been getting in for years. There is a huge amount of growth in there. Any suggestions for best way to remove it? Pressure wash, vinegar spray...? I don't want to damage the main seal above all of the growth.

Ahhh ain't that the fun part? I just get up under there with a pair of Pliers and start carefully pulling and scraping. Take your time, it's not really that hard.
