Can anyone give me a ROUGH est on reporting

I have Westerbeke 46 that looks like it has lost compression in all cylinders. Until we tear it down a bit we won't know the exact cause or whether it can be fixed or should be fixed. The W46 looks like it is out of production and replaced by the W50D. That would give me a few more ponies and I suspect fit in the old space with minimal modification.

Can anyone give me a ballpark estimate of the cost of re powering in this size range? I've just finished all sorts of repairs and upgrades and money is going to be really tight. I just want a feel for how many pencils I'm going to have sell on the street corner. Meanwhile I'll burn a few joss sticks that it just needs a valve job!

Thanks, I think,
Rich

Rough estimate 10 - 20 K. Depends on how much work you can do. If exhaust needs replacing. If engine beds need rebuilding, etc, etc, etc...

Thanks,

Ten K would be difficult. I have no idea where I would come up with 20K

Yep, I would be lighting those joss sticks right away

How many hours on the existing engine and do you have a long history with it.

I would probably prefer to do (or get done) a leak down compression test first up before doing anything else. This should give you a clearer idea of where the real problem is. Maybe just valves or rings???

Of course, if it needs reboring, pistons, bearings, head job etc, then repowering will be a better option especially the W50D has the same (or nearly the same) footprint and external connections.

Good luck with getting it sorted.

I know you haven't asked for help on the compression problem but maybe the forum can help. You say you have lost compression on all cylinders. It would be unusual for all cylinders to lose compression at the same time. Have you done a compression check? What is the compression? Are you sure the compression release, if that engine has one, is not stuck open?

Re: Can anyone give me a ROUGH est on reporting

The mechanic needed to get a compression check adapter for that engine. He plans to test each cylinder and go from there. He fears that the engine may have sat too long and I may have broken rings.

I must admit he is being very methodical. Beyond that one statement he does not want to speculate without more testing.

I am a Class A worrier, imagine the worst and plan for it. If it turns out better, well then fine. I too found it strange that all 4 cylinders would be without compression. We tried to start it and not even direct ether could get so much as a cough out of it.

I tend to trust him. He has a reputation of being the best in the area and is usually booked weeks in advance.

Well excuse me, I'm off to light a few dozen more joss sticks.

Thank you gentlemen, I'll keep you informed after the compression tests.

Rich ( but not for much longer)

I've been around diesels for 60 years and never heard of no compression in all cylinders. Maybe if someone stole your head.
DeepFrz is right to look for a compression release, but the best mechanic in the area missing that???
I have a similar engine running a generator. They are not that hard to rebuild. Parts and head work is about $1000+ w/o a mechanic. Some colleges have auto shops that let you bring your own stuff. You could learn.

Pull the injectors, put some marvel mystery oil in the cylinders and put your thumb over each hole and spin the engine. Pull your valve cover, look for stuck valves.

Easy, basic tests.

There is no compression release, not even for engine shut down.

Re: Can anyone give me a ROUGH est on reporting

I'm like the other guys cabo, I have never heard of losing compression on all cylinders at the same time. Among the other tests suggested here, might spin her over check to see if you might have blown a head gasket. Things might not be as dire as they first appear.

Hello, I remember a friend how changed it's Westerbeck and didn't know that they change engine brand. Diesel and oil filters, pump changed side and exhaust also. They had to cross all fuel line and return, exhaust tube.... This was not expected and they discoverd it only once they got their new engine. Check all is on the same side on the new engine.

With no compression release, my bet would be head gasket. Good luck!

Re: Can anyone give me a ROUGH est on reporting

It would be too great a coincidence to have broken rings in every cylinder.

I guess you probably haven't lost compression in all cylinders. But I would try the classic test -- pull the injectors, put 5cc or so of oil in each cylinder, put the injectors back, bleed, crank. If it starts and runs more or less, you have a ring problem.

If it's the same, then it is something to do with valves or head gasket.

If it runs roughly, then crack each injector pipe in turn and note which one made no difference -- there's your problem.

Ditto on that. The lose of compression totally? Best of luck! It may pay to have it looked at by a pro..

Can anyone give me a ROUGH est on reporting

Something posted earlier has piqued my interest. I don't have a compression release handle but I do have a compression release solenoid. I'll have the mechanic check to see if it is stuck in the off position.

By the way he cracked the injectors and it's getting fuel but no response even when he injected ether.
