Burp Dripless Stuffing Box On Each Launch?

I’m pretty sure with new dripless stuffing boxes there’s a burp process or if the shaft comes out... but does one need to do this every time the boat comes out of the water?

I don’t remember doing it for my last haul out, but I don’t think it occurred to me then, that the water could evaporate or dry/drain out.

thanks,

If your stuffing box has a vent line, you don't need to burp it. It will fill by itself.

Re: Burp Dripless Stuffing Box On Each Launch?

Careful, my brother burnt out a volvo seal because it wasn't burped. It caused a frantic few hours dealing with the flooding (it completely split) and trying to get an emergency liftout.

Another mate burnt out the inner sterntube bearing due to not burping an oil filled lip seal system.

Even with a bleedline the seal may not get properly lubricated by water, or the bleedline may be blocked. Good routine to check the seal temperature by hand after a slipping or grounding as well.

Interesting points, Snowpetrel. Ours makes a "pop corn popping" sort of noise when it wants burping. Thanks.

If there is no vent line, it must be burped after the boat has been out of the water.
Only takes a minute or so. As others have said, if you don't do this, there is no water lube and cooling of the wearing surfaces and they will likely self destruct.

Regards,
Richard.

I just remembered that I had the original installation instructions, and it confirms the need to do it every time.

The Volvo dripless must be burped after every haulout or it will be ruined from heat and friction, then leak. The manual for my boat suggests using waterproof grease on the sealing lips to reduce wear on dripless and shaft.

^^^This. It's the small line (1/4" I.D., if I recall) that goes onto the barb atop the bellows of a typical (PSS brand) dripless unit. Just make sure the line a) is not clogged with salt or other debris and b) is looped above the waterline, or you may find the "dripless" aspect compromised. Pardon the blurriness, but what I mean can be seen in this shot taken of my new T-shaped exhaust setup. The nylon line to the upper right is attached to the PSS on my shaft log.

If you can see water that has risen part-way up this line, it confirms water ingress sufficient to cool the shaft seal.

Good point about the salt accumulation in the vent pipe.

Re: Burp Dripless Stuffing Box On Each Launch?

Hi
I ran a hose from the heat exchanger on our 3JH Yanmar via a vented loop(Vetus) to the PSS on our C380.

Maybe overkill on a yacht but it works really well and no need to 'Burp' it.

Cheers Tom

Hi
You don't.

As soon as you start the engine some of your raw water is pumped through the vented loop to the PSS. This ensures a positive flow of cooling water and is how most powercraft are plumbed.

I think PSS say to do this if the vessel is capable of motoring over 8-10kts to prevent the syphoning of water from the stern tube.

Cheers Tom

Re: Burp Dripless Stuffing Box On Each Launch?

ok now im nervous...i have a non-vented type and i never burped it after haul out for survey two years ago. this is my first boat and in my inexperience didnt realize i had to.

can it be burped while the boat is in the water? i dont know why but the thought of loosening the clamps and screws on my shaft that seperates the ocean from the inside of my boat probably makes me the most nervous out of anything i can do on my boat.
