Beta repower question.

I'm replacing a Perkins 4-108 with a new Beta Marine engine this summer and need to make a couple decisions.

We have a ~37,000 lb 1984 Slocum cutter rigged double-ender with skeg rudder.

Going with serpentine belt and 200amp Balmar alternator.

1. Looking at either 43 or 50hp. About $1,500 diff.

2. Trying to decide the tranny.

Any opinions?

Re: Beta repower question.

I re powered with a Beta 43 two years ago and faced a similar question. I have been very satisfied with the re power. Kristali is 24,000 and 39'; for your larger boat I would choose the 50.

Good luck

Steve

Re: Beta repower question.

We have a Nanni 43 (same basic Kubota engine) in our boat, and find it quite satisfactory. But, we are about 12 tonnes loaded for cruising and enjoy a pretty slippery shape. I think that in your instance the 50 hp might be worth the extra money.

Of course, there are some on this forum who would say even that is woefully underpowered...

Re: Beta repower question.

Give a jingle to the Beta distributor on the west coast and learn what you can from him. Stan and Arron in Beta NC were quite direct about their transmission suggestions for my New beta 30 based on lots of customer experience. Additional research supported their suggestions. They clearly didn't want dissatisfied users.

Bigger!

You can alwaysdial it back; but the smaller cannot be dialed UP !

Re: Beta repower question.

Its amazing how times have changed nobody would think of putting any thing but a 45/50 hp in a boat 35/40ft now days. My 45ft 20 ton steel ketch has the original 35hp Yanmar fitted in 1984 3500hrs and it ticks like a clock. The great thing is that I can do the same days sail as most similar boats ( some much younger) guess it makes you put more into the sail trim and look harder at the weather ect when you cant just fire up the iron sail and power away, sailors don't make the effort I seem to see a lot of twin hulls doing this. Don't get me wrong the old but wonderful 35 does the job and I have her and prop tweeked so can sit on 5 knots if the going is not too bad.
In the 80s the motor was to get in and out of an anchorage not to travel with like a power boat !!! maybe some motor sailing but I am still doing the sail thing as much as I can and loving it. Last year 7 months out on the hook sailing most days diesel cost for the year was $Au485.00 you cant beat that !!!!! ( thanks to sun and wind) electricity and propulsion.

Re: Beta repower question.

Thanks for the input! I'll definitely check with the distributor on gear recommendation. An email will be going out today.

No extra weight or size, so I am leaning toward the 50hp.

Re: Beta repower question.

When I bought the Beta 50 the were definitely recommending the twindisc over the zf. Run a few prop calcs to see what ratio fits your old prop better.

Re: Beta repower question.

Our old Whitby had a Ford-Lehman 80hp motor. I thought that might have been overkill too but a few times the extra power saved the boat in tight quarters many times and trying to cross a nasty bar once. I'd go with the 50hp if all else is good.

Indeed.

My boat is 44,000 pounds light ship, and 100hp is barely enough, in my opinion. If I were repowering I would look for maybe 120hp.

Re: Beta repower question.

Call this guy. Not only will help with the engine selection, but also transmission and prop considerations. Most help we got from anyone and any of the brands when searching for a repower.
