Best way to transfer fuel from Jerry Jugs to fuel tank?
Looking for the best way to fill the main diesel fuel tank from Jerry Jugs at sea.
When we start a siphon it usually breaks towards the bottom of the jug leaving up to a gallon at the bottom. There is not enough room surrounding the fill port to pour the remainder into the tank.
Little hand pumps require constant pumping resulting in a long fuel transfer time way slower than the speed of a siphon.
Anyone know of a fast drill motor attachment pump that handles diesel?
Any other ideas?
Thanks!

Fast transfer pumps aren't cheap. One option is to install a small valve as close to the bottom as possible. With a short hose and a block under the opposite side you transfer the fuel w/o having to tend it. You get almost the last drop. No spills and easier than pumping or pouring. Time doesn't matter if you don't have to stand and watch.
When younger I commercial tuna fished and carried about a dozen 55 gallon tanks. It worked much better than tipping them.

I also have three for these fluids and I like them but the last gallon IS hard to siphon out of the Jerry jugs.

+1. Shaker siphon. I think there is a brand name named "Super Siphon" available on Amazon. I own several for use in transfering fuel and in beer brewing.
Inexpensive. Simple. Reliable. Effective. No power required.

I use a 3/8" fuel hose and a squeeze bulb to siphon with. It's slow, but I get every last drop out of the jerry jug. I also tip the jug to make the narrow corner of the bottom the low spot.

Re: Best way to transfer fuel from Jerry Jugs to fuel tank?
Had to power back 200 miles to do some repairs. Used the shaker syphon and it was quite easy. Wasn't a big deal getting almost the fuel out of the jug though was motorsailing with a 5-10 degree heel so fuel pooled on the leeward side. If you are the straight and level, need to hold the jug at angle to get the last drops at the end.
Tried pouring the fuel into the tank at first but didn't work well despite pretty calm seas. Fill is in the cockpit soul which is really convenient. Still had issues with trying to hit puka despite a large funnel as the target even with the easy motion of the boat. Five gallons of fuel gets heavy right quick trying to pour it straight from the jug.

Re: Best way to transfer fuel from Jerry Jugs to fuel tank?
Get a length of red rubber multi purpose hose that fits over the jerry can nozzle by 3" or so & jams tight on the taper.
Insert hose in deck filler a foot or so.
Open vent on jerry. Lift & tip jerry to pour.
Note: It is nice if your boat has something to set the jerry on or hold it in the air while pouring-saves arm strain & danger of jerry sliding around.
Cheers/ Len

That's what I use too. When the container is getting close to empty, I just tilt it a bit. The weight of that brass valve keeps the end down in the bottom corner until the last few drops

We do exactly the same thing and transferred fuel in some pretty tough seas. And it does not seem to take that long.

Re: Best way to transfer fuel from Jerry Jugs to fuel tank?
My onboard fuel polisher has a small electric pump and is built around a Raycor 900 filter. I have installed two little brass valves, one on the intake hose and one on the output. This allows me to divert suction from either the main fuel tank or an auxiliary intake hose, and to divert output to either the main fuel tank or an auxiliary output hose.
To transfer fuel from any of my six 5-gallon plastic jerry jugs, I simply take the auxiliary intake hose and insert it into the bottom of the jug, setting the valve to use that hose, and leave the output valve in position to transfer directly to the main fuel tank.
It takes about 5 minutes to transfer most of the fuel in a jug to the main fuel tank, after which I can either pour the remainder into the fuel opening atop the tank if it's calm enough or wait to do it later.
With this system I can add the contents of three jugs (15 gals) in less than 30 minutes, including setup and cleanup.
The system works for me in both calm conditions and in pretty rough seas.
BTW, the fuel goes thru the Racor 900 filter on its way to the fuel tank.

Re: Best way to transfer fuel from Jerry Jugs to fuel tank?
I now use a small battery-operated hand pump like this
Amazon.com: Sierra Tools Battery-Operated Liquid Transfer Pump, Model# JB5684: Home Improvement
Very convenient, no spilling, reasonably fast fuel transfer.
I used to use the snake siphon, but it was more difficult with a moving boat or in rough seas to pump out all fuel from the jerry jugs.
During summer in crowed Med marinas, I now almost always refill using jerry jugs using that small pump.
