Re: Best tool for Removing the Retaining Ring?

Onceuponatime I was forced to think outside the box for spinning off an oil filter. If you take a heavy cotton work glove and spray it with adhesive (rubber cement type will do) and then spread some clean washed sand or other grit on it, and let it dry completely, you get a very nice gripping tool.

When you grip something like a pipe or can, the grits cut in, just a little, and provide a tremendous boost in friction. So you can "hand tight" grip the hell out of it.

Eventually the grit comes off, but so what? Cheap & simple to do it again.

I'd use either a c spanner or a strap wrench. You can make one using some webbing or canvas. Tie a loose double overhand knot, insert a screwdriver, twist to tension and use the screwdriver lever arm to preload and loosen the filter.

I'm not sure if that filter should only be hand tight. Something to watch when reinstalling it.
